Poiteen and Nich-Nick, I don't suppose you know anything about continuing your UK employment working from your new home in the US? I am scrambling to find out whether I am allowed to. I have set up a number of threads (here and on ExpatBrits but am getting all kinds of varied resposnes.

I have called the Inland Revenue and they were great. They told me I don't pay UK tax on duties performed out of the UK once I become a non-resident. So it looks like they see me as "working in America" once I become a non-resident. (So that raises the question of when I become technically non-resident in the UK....)

I will call the IRS on Monday to see what they say.

But this work authorization thing remains an issue...

Yes, you better sort it with Inland Revenue and IRS. I would think if you were working for a UK company and getting paid by them you could continue for the time being without work authorization. I don't think you would get in trouble for not having EAD. It's the employers in the US, who get in trouble for hiring undocumented aliens. But I know there is an agreement between the two countries about taxes etc. which would eventually have to be sorted. www.irs.gov has tons of information if you go there and search. There's a "publication" as they call them on just about everything. Understanding what they mean is another question. But some preliminary reading might help you zero in on what you want to ask. Just like anywhere else, the first person you get on the phone may not have all the answers. They do bump you to more specialized departments however if they can't answer. The thing about IRS that I've experienced is you can call and get a decision on a question, then call back 5 minutes later and get the opposite answer from a different agent. Check out the website because it's quite extensive with a good search function.

Thanks Nich-Nick. It's lucky we enjoy a bit of research isn't it?! I see that you got your visa and will be heading out soon. Congrats and good luck with the move. x
