Sorry, does anyone know how soon she can visit? She already has a flight booked back with me a few days after the wedding.

Could she really leave with my right after the wedding? The way he put it wasn't that bad at all.

Obviously each case will be different. I am Canadian and married to an American applying for immigration status too. After we filed, my lawyer told me to 'stay put' in Canada. You have obviously told the US government that she has immigrant intent by filing the paperwork so, according to our lawyer, it will be difficult for anyone traveling to the US who has already shown immigrant intent. I've already been denied entry twice to the US which made our case even tougher. My last entry was a limited stay of 18 days. But that was due to extenuating circumstances. So I am staying put, like my lawyer told me to, in order to make our remaining process easier.

Good luck

Mine wasn't difficult at all. I visited several times and never had a problem at all.

I brought all my ties to Canada but never had to show any of them.

If you are honest and answer all their questions....you should be able to visit.

Let's Keep the Song Going!!!

My husband has been visiting the US via land for a weekend here, a week-10 days there, for the almost 1 year since we got married. He's always honest and they've never hassled him. He does bring his ties to Canada with him just in case.

I would think that her coming with you into the US immediately after the wedding would cause the officer at the POE a bit of alarm. If you could postpone it or travel separately this might be better.

We have traveled together across the border a couple of times and it was OK but I suspect that the last officer who let us into the US together might have felt differently if we had been in a bigger vehicle as he started to say something that sounded like it was going to be a denial of entry but then he seemed to change his mind and simply told my husband that he cant' stay in the US. We told him how we've been working things and he was OK with it.

There are officers who have a firm policy that if you are in the midst of immigration, they simply will not allow you to come into the US, period. And that's their right. Others are more cool about it.

BTW, Canada is *not* a part of the visa waiver program, just for accuracy's sake.

I'd think a K-3 is the best way to go if she doesn't need to work right away.

Good luck and sorry that you were hit with the immigration realities. They bite!

So I live in Las Vegas, and my fiance lives in Calgary. We have only been dating for about a year now, but I proposed to her almost two months ago.

Our plan was to get married in Calgary, and then have her move back to Vegas with me afterwards. We were both naive when thinking that was the entire process. After much prodding by my father, we finally called the US Consulate in Calgary and after paying a ridiculous per-minute charge of almost 2 dollars, we gleaned the information that if we get married in Canada, she won't be able to go to the USA for 6-12 months (obviously the time to apply and all that), and if she comes here to get married, she would be sent home to wait for the application times.

Now, that sounded a little sketchy, so I googled some information and found myself here. I was excited that I found an ACTIVE board online with up to date posts and regular visitors. I read a little bit more, about the K-1 Visa, but the whole thing is still confusing me.

We are getting married in 2 weeks (September 12th) and have basically planned everything already. Everything is paid for, everything is in order, except what happens afterward.

So I'm really thinking that we screwed up. For one, a shotgun wedding wasn't ideal, planning everything in 2 months, but we have been long distance for the entire time we've been together and we wanted to finally just be together.

I feel like I'm faced with three options.

1. Get married, apply, and wait patiently.

2. Move back to Canada (where I'm from), leaving a great job and a great place to live, and starting over (for the fourth time in the last 3 years)

3. Cancel the wedding.

Obviously, 3 isn't an option, but I included in anyway.

What should I do? Are those my only options? My fiance keeps calling me crying, and doesn't know what to do, thinks it's the end of the world. I don't know what to tell her anymore. How can this end well?

I don't know if this is possible, or even helps out with your situation (especially this close to the wedding date), but another option (for what it's worth) is to have the wedding, but just as a ceremony, not as a legally binding marriage - don't get the marriage license. I honestly don't know the rules about visiting between US and Canada, especially with K-1 or K-3 processes..... I'm sure someone else can help with that. I vaguely remember reading something about it in the past.

i understand ur frustration. if i were u i wud go for option 1. u have already had the long distance relationship for a few years...might as well have it for another few months and get it over with for the rest of ur lives...plus canada is not that far, u can visit her periodically...u r in a better situation that the most of us (like myself from India) where we have to think 1000 times to go see our spouses due to another 1000 reasons. good luck in whatever u decide...dont spoil it for urself, go enjoy ur wedding, its a once in a lifetime affair...#3 shouldnt b on ur list.
