Mags, if it makes you feel any better, many people ask me (and mind you, these are "educated" folks) "Does your husband speak English?"

Oddly enough, no one has ever asked me that question about my husband that I can recall. I assume that they have already assumed he does. I mean, all Western Europeans know English, right?

I don't like to use the word 'hate' as it's pretty strong.

What I strongly dislike would include e.g. expensive, private health care system (are there any other countries on this planet where the health care is as privatized and money making oriented?), the two party system (conservative, and more conservative), expensive mobile phone contracts (I don't really care about unlimited US calls as I hate being on the phone on my free time), the whole suing culture, RIAA, other corporations with similar agendas (attacking people and suing them out of money with guilty until proven innocent, at your own expense culture), the many and many without a concept of money in and money out (credit cards for everything, taking pride in never having paper money in their wallet, and paying their credit card loans with another credit card) and without any basic clues how to do personal budgeting, the whole US-centric world view (in TV and web, that is often SF-ness, then Californianess, then USness), the abstinence only campaigns, the people making a big fuzz which way their friends and people they don't know swing, and the religious agendas of any kind (when e.g. the history or biology classes are modified to reflect the religious agenda of anyone). I also really don't like HFCS or the abundance of fast food, or how the schooling system allows illiterate and innumerate people to pass (in Europe, you have to write the answers to the test questions and not do a lottery row of A-F to 200 questions), and social elitism.

One of the things I really miss is a working public transport system.

I hate (for lack of a more appropriate term) first and foremost that this country is now ruled by corporations, not We The People anymore. Corporate money controls campaigns, politicians, media, government.

The second thing I hate is that the U.S. doesn't have a single payer health care system or at least a public option, something every civilized nation on this planet has. "Don't get sick" really doesn't work well for me.

THANK YOU!! I tried explaining what bacon in Aus looks like (the big round section and the skinnier section but nowhere near as much fat) but for some reason googling it didn't work.. I mean we call it bacon too.. so keep finding US ones..
