Jersey Girl,

Read the I-864, it explains what the obligations are.

Scary stuff. Especially since about half of the marriages will end in divorce. Here's another question: what if the alien is not covered by medical insurance and runs up a whooper hospital bill? Is the sponsor responsible? (Whether they're still together or not.)

Yodrak, I read it again and understand that the sponsor (and joint sponsor) agree to maintain the immigrant at 125% above the poverty line. Other than that, there aren't many specifics. What if the immigrant incurs debt on a credit card? Or, what if they land in an emergency room without health insurance? Does the sponsor's liability end after they've kicked in their obligatory 125%?

JerseyGirl,

Read your own first sentence again. Add repayment of any federally-funded means-tested benefit that the government may have paid to the alien.

Well.....I currently work for the federally governed programs and I recently checked the regulations for the State of California. These may be different in other States but...... we only hold the sponsor responsible for 10 years. The immigrant is considered "sponsor deeming" for 10 years and the sponsor is federally required to provide support for the immigrant. This includes programs such as Food Stamps, cash aid ect....but it clearly excludes the Medi-cal program. (Medi-caid) The immigrant can obtain health care under Medi-Cal without any "sponsor deeming" requirements.

Again...other States may be different. As for support...marriage to another spouse does not transfer sponsorship but...if the spouse is making "above" the 125% poverty level, the sponsor is fine. However, if the immigrant marries a deadbeat and both have 0 or under 125% income level, you could be paying your ex up to that level...............kinda crazyyyyy huh??? So...you better know your fiancee really well before you get married and go through this process......
