Hubby filed his 2007 tax return electronically from Iraq. He gave me his user name and password for the service he used and I printed off the tax return and the acceptance confirmation page but of course it's not hand signed (it shouldn't be since he he signed it using a special electronic signature). My question is....will the embassy accept it?

Or is there something else we should be giving them to prove that the tax return was filed and accepted?

Thanks for the help.

You should have had him get tax transcripts. But I reckon it is too late now.

Sorry, I don't know if printouts will be sufficient. Do you have his W-2s as well?

He tried to get the transcripts but like other times with sending requests for documents he never got anything back. He even tried accessing over the phone and it doesn't work (I think because he's using a phone outside the US). He made me print his 2007 W-2's as well so I have those.

The printout may not be sufficient, unless accompanied by the W-2's. I would still request the tax transcripts, and have them en-route, should they ask for them, you can deliver them as soon as you get them. Its a simple call to the IRS to request the transcripts.

From the IRS Website:

You can obtain a transcript by calling (800)–829–1040 or by completing and mailing Form 4506-T (PDF), Request for Transcript of Tax Return, to the address listed in the instructions to request all types of transcript verification of non-filing, and wage/income information.

Transcripts will be mailed directly to you, and should be received within two weeks after the IRS gets your request. Transcripts can be mailed to a third party if you specify this on Form 4506-T, however, you must sign and date the form giving your consent for the disclosure.

ETA: He can have the form sent directly to you, pleas see above.

Good luck,

-P

As long as you have a copy of the 2007 tax return along with the 2007 W2, you'll be fine. It does not have to be signed since a lot of people file their taxes electronically.

So don't worry, you're fine.

Thanks for the advice. I do have the accompanying W2's and him requesting the transcripts isn't possible right now because they have cut off all mailings in and out of his location. He can't get the transcripts by phone either. I am going to give in what I have...explain the situation and hope they don't need anything else.

Just to put your mind further at ease, here is a note from the Adjudicator's field manual about electronically filed tax returns. Don't forget to include the declaration control number :

Note: IRS permits and encourages electronic filing of Forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ. An electronically filed tax return may also be signed electronically. When a person signs and files the tax return electronically, a “hard copy” of the original tax return will not exist. In this situation, it is acceptable for the person to submit a plain copy printout, showing the tax return as it would have looked, had it been filed on paper, together with the IRS-issued “declaration control number.” By signing the Form I-864 or I-864A “under penalty of perjury,” the person certifies that the copy is a copy of what was submitted to IRS. As with paper-filed returns, it is also acceptable for the person to submit an IRS transcript of the electronically filed return.
