My ex-wife's uncle would come visit once every so often, and his tirade we used to hear so frequently was, "I hate Mexicans!" We would hear how "Mexicans are Ruining the United States!" and "A Mexican killed my friend, because he didn't know how to drive!" I was so sick of hearing this bull$h !t. I told him that he was offensive, that I love driving to Mexico on the weekends, where I have great friends, and they're always nicer to me than whites. He didn't have anything to say, but somehow, his brain was programmed to hate "Mexicans" - oh, and he's a Northern California "PROGRESSIVE."

You find those uneducated "whites" everywhere dear friend. The point here is to show them that you are more polite and educated than they are, kill them with intelligence ;)

P.S. Eye opener here: If you think some Mexicans and their unwillingness of learning the language is bad, just stop by your nearby trailer park and tell me if you can actually call "language" to the gibberish they call English. Some people cannot even tell you where the District of Columbia is, you find uneducated and mediocre people EVERYWHERE, not just coming from Mexico...

I must say, my dad was not too impressed when he "discovered" Bren was American

Today they are good buddies though.

My grandfather said I should not marry an American because "they divorce so easily". Then he refused to come to our engagement party :crying:

Stereotypes exist everywhere. :(

You know what's funny that even though latinos are so discriminated here in the States, many of them are racists themselves. I know a lot of them who are not very accepting of black people even if they're from the same country. How do you like them apples? Pretty messed up huh?

Diana

OMG Diana, that is so true. Just go to Miami - the infighting within the Spanish-speaking community is terrible. Caribbean islanders like PR, DR, Cuba hate South Americans, hate each other, hate Central Americans...South Americans hate various people from other SA countries...trying to get an Argentine and a Chilean to agree is like trying to tell the Pope to become Jewish - will never happen. Mexicans don't like Central Americans because many from El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras get a free pass because of their refugee status. And then, don't even think of asking an Argentine if they're Latino - because they see themselves as white/european (which they are). And then naturally, everyone just wants to kick the ####### out of the Cubans because they can just come on in if they have a wet-foot/dry-foot and they get to partake of the public trough. It just astounds me to no end. :bonk:

Unfortunately, I come from a very racist and nationalistic family as well. My mother is starting to come around. My sis doesn't care as she's dating a Czech. But my father will always be an ignorant backwoods redneck.

I'm still going to marry my fiance. There's nothing he can do to stop that. I never got along with my father anyway, so it's no sobstory for me if he disowns me for who I choose to marry. My mom can always come visit without her husband. People shouldn't let racist parents decide who they will or won't marry. One day your parents will be gone anyway and it will be you alone left with your decision.

My family are the biggest racists I have ever seen in my life. So when I married a Mexican, you can imagine how that went down. When I say how hard this process is, I always get that look, you know the one "You did this to yourself, so don't talk about it to me" look. Does anyone else have a family like this?

Its not something I have to worry about. But I might be more of the exception to the rule. In my family, there has a few cross border marriages.

It started with my parents, my mom is from the US, my dad is Swedish. I have a aunt on my moms side who is married to and living in Canada. An uncle from my dad's side is married to a woman from Chile.

Among my cousins, I have a cousin who is married to a guy from Australia, and another cousin who is married to a guy from Togo.

The way its going in my immediate family though, I doubt any of my siblings are actually going to marry someone from the US. My sister is married to a guy who grew up in Mexico, though he is not Mexican (Long story on that one). I married someone from Indonesia. My other sister is dating a guy from Ecuador.

Never was a problem for us. My family is accepting of pretty much any choice I make in that regard, and her family seems to like me just fine. They don't like that I live so far away, but they understand that her happiness is what takes her away.

hahaha

So true. But even so.... I lived in Puerto Rico and there is some serious tension both there and here in NY with Dominicans. It's so strange & I don't understand why! Everybody used to call them 'malditos dominicanos' jaja... I do know that there is a lot of illegal immigration from DR to PR because PR is part of the US and is economically stable and a great place to live (not to mention very close to DR).

There is so much stereotyping - even Luis (my fiancee) was a little stereotypical saying that Caribbean people (PR DR, Cubanos) don't speak correct Spanish. (which is funny because I speak Spanish with a Puerto Rican dialect so I was pretty offended) And I asked him... "and you do?" Because as far as I'm concerned there is no "correct" Spanish or English, just dialects. Nobody speaks like we are 'supposed' to. Dios mio...

My father's side of the family is very judgemental. They talk about me behind my back & are not ok with me marrying somebody from another country. As far as I'm concerned, they've never been there 4 me anyway so what's the difference now? They only judge and never look at their own lives or criticize themselves.

Otherwise, my family - the one that matters - is 100% OK with me and Luis. They can't wait to meet him ... soon. Our papers are at the embassy we're just waiting 4 an interview date.

You guys are great. I laughed for how everyone looks at the subject differently and your reactions. This is really awesome subject.

Well, here in the US they teach you to hate people. Look at all the wars with different countries during last few years and decades. You hate them and they hate you. Most of people who become ignorant and don't want to accept anything usually only listening to media without their own analysis and accept it as they tell them.

Something they don't get is people from any race are mixed, good and bad are mix and just think you are dealing with the good ones only.

I haven't had any racist issue in my family yet after four years of marriage :D but I am sure it is hard to deal with.

Toast for the day, we can all live together without any problem and negative thoughts.

Cheers

It's not so much my family, but former friends did the same thing... You married an Arab? and then brought the on coming of insults, racial slurs,etc.... I know friends are not really the same as family and some might argue it's easier to drop friends than your family, but my friends were like my family and it was terribly hard... I'm not sure what advice to give you, but I think in my case, I had to put my foot down. I told them straight to their face how hurtful it was and how I didn't want to associate with people who wouldn't give someone a chance solely because of where they came from or personal prejudices. I'm so sorry that you are going through this and I hope that you have a strong support system outside of the family members who are doing this to you. But in the long run, the best revenge is to be happy - There is no bigger payback then a happy healthy marriage

Aren't you part Palestinian? Didn't they realize that before saying that to you?

When I got married to my husband, his family is fine with me, I dont feel that they dont like me.. (they really pretend too well.. ) Until we decided to bought a house in mycountry, then all the bad things came out, my intentions, where I came from, etc.. At first, we planned to buy a house in the US but all the member of his family are giving negative thoughts so just decided to changed plans and ended up buying house in my country..

But you know what, I dont care.. I love my husband.. We are living a million miles away from my inlaws , so it does not really matter.. When we visit I just ignore and pretend that I did not know or nothing happened.. As long as they dont invoilve our child and instead love my child., thats all really matters..

Time will come they wiill realize that we all have our own life to live with..
