I agree in marinades, or really anything that you will cook! You can't taste the buttermilk so I could do it .. but drinking! HELL NO! And even more HELL NO is eating the "butter" that is on top! OMG the smell! I donnow why my daughter likes it! But actually the buttermilk in the US smells better then the ones here since the pasterization (sp?) takes away alot of the smell! And really I am ready for summer to be over ... so we won't have anymore *bad milk* incidents .... and I don't have to boil the milk 3x! Too much work!

BTW does anyone like kefir here?

Is that what I've seen in the grocery store with the milk? I've never tried it.

Kefir is a thickish yoghurt drink (many times fruit flavoured) sold in the milk dept ... also called kefir in the US! Really tasty! Instant smoothie!

Okay, that's what I've seen. I'll give it a try.

Here's a tradition I forgot. Majdool dates. Can't have any other kind during Ramadan. I went shopping last weekend, and they didn't have any out yet. I nearly had a heart attack. Thankfully, a kind store clerk went around back and got some from where they were being packaged.

Seriously like candy. I've been eating them as dessert all week, so I'll probably need to go back and get more in a week.

We bought the dates at the ARabic store but I don't think that was the brand. They were in huge red boxes piled up near the cash register. I guess it was $45/box but we got a pound I think. I personally hate goey dates and prefer the candied type but I'm thinking of making datenut bread...would that still count?

Ooo, these are the gooey kind. I'm salivating just thinking about them *sneaks off to steal a date or 2*

Go ahead and make date bread. It's not a "you MUST break your fast with plain dates and nothing else or your fast will be invalid." It's more of a " the Prophet (saws) broke his fast with plain dates, so you can follow that example if you'd like."

If it's a good recipe, please post

We got dates as well.. all were made in Algeria but the cost was only about $8.00 for the 1lb plastic container... Why 45?? They had the candied kind you are describing for around $15 but still made in Algeria... I'm just shocked at that price! Wow..
