Has anyone ever filed a tourist visa for their significant other before getting married? Please advise. And if you do and you get turned down, how long do you have to wait to reapply, the next time for a immigrant visa? We are getting married in January 2009 and wanted to apply for the immigrant visa not k-1.

Unless the JA national has strong ties to the country it is hard to be granted a tourist visa. My SO tried earlier this year and was turned down. And once y'all are married you're not eligible for the tourist visa. Read the comments in the link that JG provided -- it was very helpful to me even though we had already started the tourist visa process. Good luck to you.

Thanks to everyone for responding. So, you all dont know anyone on this site that actually applied and received a tourist visa? I saw on the thread that one individual received a tourist visa after a repeat application, but that was it. That is very interesting. So, another question, what are circumstances to expediate the process other than Military and Health Reasons? If you do apply for a toursist visa and get denied do you have to wait a certain time period to apply for any other tyoe of visa (immigrations visa)?

Thanks again to all,

Cheers

Being turned down for a visitor visa has not bearing on when you can file for a different type of visa. There is no wait time.

I do know of people who have been granted tourist visas. Those I know have businesses back in JA. They have money in the bank. They own their houses and the land on them. They have family back at home.

One lady I know owns a restaurant in MoBay and her husband is some big wig at the airport. She has family in the US and in Jamaica.

We are saying the average "Joe" on here has problems getting one because he does not have all that is needed to prove ties to the island and that he will return. It is a recurring theme on here.

There were a few folks on VJ who had a 10 year visitor visa. But they had it before they met their US SO. So you can try for it now if you want, just take heed to the "requirements" of ties to the country. After you start the family based visa process, you cannot start the visitor one.
