Bread and cheese are definitely different....a cheese sandwich to me tastes like sweet bread and plastic cheese! There apparently is a shop in Indianapolis (downtown) that sells real english cheese but I have yet to find it.

I'm having a "missing my mum's home cooking" week though so I'm biased about all food here right now. It doesn't help that I have a fussy eater husband ;) but doing a lot of mine own cooking helps, and I'm slowly introducing him into more things.

I discovered last night that they sell Wheetabix on amazon.com. They also have Devon cream and Clotted cream, and Irish bacon and and and...the prices seem comparable with other sites, but I think shipping may be a bit less because they have more volume. Plus, you can get stuff in bulk. They sell the Weetabix in cases, as well as by single box.

I buy Weetabix, Kerrygold butter and Kerrygold cheese from my local Publix. I have seen various English cheeses in the dairy section so it might be worth checking if you have a Publix near you.

As for bread - I buy Publix white mountain bread from their bakery- its not bad, its about the nearest to "real" bread I have found over here. It comes sliced fairly thin so good for a sandwich but not for toasting.

...then again anyone read the "Ingredients" in the food over here compared to back home?

oh gad, yes... 'High Fructose Corn Syrup' is known simply as 'The EVIL' in our household

and it's in EVERY-bloody-thing...

Glad i am not the only one who noticed that - thought i was going mad and just seeing things when looking at the ingredients listing things.

Guess we will have to wait a long while for them to add the chocolate chip Weetabix mini's now those are awesome.....miss those :(

check out my time line and dont forget to update yours too :D

ok, rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd ask in here for something I miss that's not Weetabix...

anyone know where to buy a spray-on, 'no white marks' deodorant? there were a few choices in both Australia and the UK, but damned if I can find one here... the best I can do is a Lady Speed Stick 'no white marks', but it's just not as good

anyone able to help me? :D

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

and it's in EVERY-bloody-thing... upside is, I'm now experimenting with making my own stuff, from bread to granola bars to whatever you can think of, so I have more control over what goes into stuff... it's great :)

can't make my own cheese though :(

and even halloumi is a bit wrong over here :(

I agree, things just taste different... and it may be inherent bias ( :innocent: ) but I haven't found much yet that I think tastes better...

The truth of the matter is that HFCS is a perfectly fine substitute for sugar, provided you don't dislike the taste. Different versions of HFCS can taste less sweet, just as sweet or much sweeter than ordinary sugar. As far as "health issues" are concerned, HFCS won't do anything worse than sugar. The problem -- and this is important -- is that many food items have both sugar and HFCS in them. This makes whatever you're eating consist of many more calories, thereby raising the potential to add extra unwanted pounds.

The truth of the matter is that HFCS make foods taste crappy, and products without it taste better. :P

That's a personal opinion. I've known some people to love certain combinations of food, most of which the "average person" would probably find revolting. For instance, someone I know likes to eat "horseradish and apple sauce sandwiches." He likes it, so to him, it's great. Is it? It may or may not be, but it's his opinion. I think it sounds awful, but once again, that's a personal opinion. Never confuse opinion and fact -- these two are very different. ;)

well, but

The truth of the matter is that HFCS is a perfectly fine substitute for sugar...

is opinion too ;)

for me, The Evil is NOT perfectly fine, any way you slice it; studies suggest it's linked to a number of problems... ' HFCS won't do anything worse than sugar'? well, that's opinion too :P

read the wiki article as a starting point; not the be-all and end-all, of course, but a relatively good summary, I think, and NOT really supporting the idea that it's a 'perfectly fine substitute'

I'm merely referencing scientific evidence, based upon numerous studies regarding HFCS. According to those studies, HFCS is a "perfectly fine substitute for sugar" and it "wont do anything worse than sugar." That is not opinion.

What would be opinion is if I said, "I love HFCS and I think it's much better than sugar." In point of fact, I don't think HFCS is wonderful nor do I believe it's the so-called "Great Evil." So long as either HFCS or sugar is used -- and not the two of them combined -- there shouldn't be a whole lot to worry about.

If you dislike the taste (and there are different types of HFCS, some of which are sweeter than others), then that's your preference. No one says you have to like it. But that is, once again, opinion (which isn't inherently right or wrong).

As for Wikipedia... it's a far from credible source. Anyone can write and/or edit entries, so everything read there must be taken with a huge grain of salt. Even if whatever is written is absolutely accurate (and sometimes it is), there's virtually no way the entry can be trusted, since anyone can deface it at any time.

please cite even one of your 'numerous studies'

and then I will cite one in return

and we will go back and forth ad infinitum :P

in the end, it depends which of the research you choose to believe... I mistrust HFCS, because of the research I have read; you don't, because of the research you have read... in the end we both have an opinion, which both of us can back up with research

the difference is, I'm not telling you you're wrong :P;)

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

That's a personal opinion.

Its a personal opinion shared by many immigrants to the US, as evidenced in this and many other threads here at Visa Journey. And probably a good reason why some food manufacturers are no longer using it in their foods now :P Ya just can't argue with Ocean Spray New Improved HFCS Free Cranberry Cocktail. ;)
