GOP platform calls for constitutional abortion ban

Republicans on Tuesday debated election principles influenced by their conservative base as well as by presidential candidate John McCain, taking a hard line on abortion.

...

In its platform debate, the party stuck to its call for a constitutional abortion ban ... and toughened already uncompromising language on the issue.

Conservatives succeeded in removing a line from a platform draft urging a reduction in abortions — underscoring their point that abortion should be eliminated.

Well, this part did surprise me:

Conservatives succeeded in removing a line from a platform draft urging a reduction in abortions — underscoring their point that abortion should be eliminated.

They are moving even further from the pro-choice position.

Sort of related is this

More Americans are questioning the role of religion in politics

RELIGION has always played an important role in American politics. But a new survey by the Pew Research Center suggests that a narrow majority of Americans now think that churches and other religious organisations should keep quiet when it comes to social and political matters. Most notable is the sharp increase since 2004 in Republicans who believe that churches should keep out of politics. This shift in opinion may represent frustration and disillusionment among social conservatives rather than a genuine desire for a political system free of religious influence.

I think there is a part of the party that would like a lesser emphasis on issues of abortion and gay marriage. But on the other hand, there is a part of the party who support the Republican party only because of their positions on social issues.

Yeah, it's largely a regional split. Northeastern and Left Coast Republicans tend to be socially liberal (relatively speaking) while more fiscally conservative. It's the GOP in the south that ruins the party, quite frankly.

I'll comment even though I shouldn't.

This divide is going to continue forever for some of us because personally I cannot comprehend how people think abortion is ok. The same way people cannot comprehend people like me who are so against abortion. The whole "it's the woman's body so it's her choice" is bull.

The bible also says don't murder and don't steal, should we take those out of our laws because they appear in the bible? Just to make sure the church and state are fully separated and all. ;)

Why are those(murder, theft) considered wrong by people of different faiths and by people of no faith, but the idea that abortion is getting rid of a life is only a religious issue? It's a topic that really bothers me. Why is it a religious issue and not a regular issue like stealing or killing? And if you don't understand why I believe this way, I also don't understand why you do either. I can understand more in the cases of saving the mom's life, but for convenience or a means of birth control I think it's absolutely horrible. My mind will never change on that. The same way I never will think it's ok to steal, kill, etc. The whole spin that it's the woman's choice is ridiculous to me.

The new platform calls for no abortions - for any reason.

I think the GOP will run into some trouble with that hard of a stance. Most of the people I've known throughout my life have been Republicans (some more conservative than others), and while many didn't particularly care for abortion, they did tend to agree that if the mother's life was in danger, then abortion would become a "necessary evil." To say "no abortions, no matter what" will probably alienate all but the most hardcore members of the party and those who're extremely conservative.

I agree to disagree.

Oh, and the Bible also condones slavery and in some parts justifies polygamy and incest.

I don't believe abortion will really be overturned anyway. The stance may just be a statement.

When they make that statement, they are telling you they want to ban abortion - all abortions, for any reason.

You're saying you don't believe they can succeed. I interpret that as you having faith in the ability of the Democratic Party to stop any such effort.

I hope your faith in the D's is well founded :)
