Hi,

My wife and I are making some travel plans and wondered when we should file our citizenship application. If we get an interview in December, for example, can we move it back to January or February given the fact that we might be abroad for 4 weeks in December?

Thanks!

You can, but you are going to get a lot of people that will advise you not to move it, or else. The reality is most of us don't know how long it will take to reschedule it. It could take a while. We risked it because we decided that we weren't going to put holiday's on hold for the next 12 months just in the of chance we were unluckly and had an interview conflict with our holiday. It might be easier just waiting to you get back from your holiday or even filing right before you leave. As I know the biometrics is easy to reschedule. It all depends on your service center. Houston was quick, we turned in in in June and have an interview less than 3 months later.

Good luck

it does not work that way. you can request a new interview date but that may take however long that is not up to you. some people do not touch to change the date since some have had trouble getting a new date.

You can ask for rescheduling your interview for your convenience.

But USCIS will reschedule it for "their" convenience. So you may never know when next rescheduled interview will be.

Therefore most people just choose to take small incovenience to sacrifice their freedom of travel to deal with first scheduled interview instead of dealing with "huge" inconvenience of unknown rescheduled interview time-frame.

I personaly don`t recomend to reschedule an interview because they have the right to put you in the end of the line. If this is not a problem for you, you are good to go.

Thanks for all of your suggestions! We will time our application to avoid being out of town, if at all possible! If we estimate poorly, we will probably just volunteer to go to the back of the line! We aren't in a huge rush, to be honest.

But it's good to now that it ain't easy to change....

THOMAS,

NO. Never cancelled an interview.. Believe me, I had my coworker here that moved his appointment to a later date, and its been almost 2 years and still did not get another date for interview.. Some people I knew also moved the date as well, it took a year before they get another date..

My advice is if you want to finish this process, just focus with it and cancel whatever your plans in the meantime.. I would suggest September will be a good time to file the N400 as many of us received NOA1&2 in less than 2 months..

I filed mine in March, USCIS received it 1st week of April, received a letter of interview on May16, and had the interview on June..

If you file this now, probably you will get the interview letter by November.. unless you filed this in California or any other busiest center.. or you have problems with your documentation..

LEt me know if you need help on anything.

Thanks Completely. It is very exciting to think we might be free in just a few months! To be honest, we are currently overseas and will be arriving back in the US on 19 December. In this case, I think I will wait 6 weeks and file the N400.

So you are saying we can file with Texas and then request an interview in Atlanta?

Thanks so much for your enthusiasm. It would be amazing not to have to worry about immigration ever again!

Thomas,

Where is your home address in the US? You have to file it to the place where the under jurisdiction of your place.. Even if you file it in Texas. if you dont live in Texas, they will still transfer your application to other service center that has jurisdiction of your place..

And also the reason why I told you do not wait just do it now, because if your wife has a conditional residence, you will need to file Removing condition 90 days before expiration.. which is more difficult and the timeline is hard to meet up when you are overseas..

Once you did the packet, have your wife go to US Embassy overseas to do her fingerprints and include it in the packet..

Thanks. I actually recounted, and we definitely want to get this application in by the end of the month. That way, we should definitely have an interview during our time in the states, December-March.

Our home address is near Atlanta, which I think has a service center, but not a major service center...I'm a bit confused on the difference.
