I like the US OK, but I'm pretty sure I love it. I get defensive about it when I travel.

I guess I love it more than the flag and definitely more than the Republicans.

I thought the only people who joined MENSA were those who had an inflated sense of their own intelligence. However, I'm not much of a joiner so I don't know.

You actually have to take an IQ test to be able to join.

Fair enough, but who would go to the trouble to take a test to 'prove' to oneself that one has a big IQ? If you are smart, you likely know already, you probably went to a prestigious college and got a great degree - or you started a successful company. You aren't going to be smart and sitting at home twiddling your thumbs. What does being a member of MENSA do for you, beyond being able to say, "hey, look at me, look how smart I and my fellow MENSA members are"?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

My mother was a MENSA member. She had an IQ of 158, or something like that. She certainly didn't have an over inflated ego, in fact, she was just about the most down to earth person you'd ever meet. She sat the MENSA test out of curiosity, nothing more. She never went to university or gained a degree. She was a matrimonial and probate legal secretary for the majority of her life. The majority of MENSA members don't fit your criteria, Cleo. ;)

Mensa members get all sorts of offers: magazine subscriptions, cheap flights, credit card deals, discounts etc etc. Too many to mention.

Ah, so it's an advertisers wet dream then? Figures :D

No offence, but just because your mum did it for 'kicks' doesn't mean that is the predominant profile. If you really want to prove your intelligence there are a lot better ways to do it than join an 'intelligence' club.

Don't "love" America. It's just a place to live. Don't see any reason to be overly joyous and "loving" of things I had no choice of, like where I was born, or what sex I am, or the color of my eyes, or race. On the other hand, I find nationalists and the excessively "proud" to be the most dangerous, and I mostly look to criticize or mock them.

I am shocked and disgusted that not one person commented on my lifetime membership in STD.

I don't love America any more than I loved the UK - "indifferent" would best describe my view.

Part of my personal identity is tied to my home country - but I don't have any fervent desire to flag wave. Simply there is a lot to be thankful for in this country, but it isn't the paradise that many seem to think it is. We have many social and economic problems (not least our rather "interesting" foreign policy) - nothing to be terribly proud of IMO.
