How does it work - you have to answer 6 out of 10 correct? What happens if you dont - are you automatically rejected, or can you apply for a re-test?

Also, do you just need to know the answers to the 98 questions in the civics booklet which you get? I hate learning for tests!

yes you need to get 6 out of 10 questions correct. so if you are in question number 7, and you have gotten 6 right, they stop asking questions (based on what i've read here).

i also studied the glossary at the back of the booklet. i wasn't asked any questions not written in that booklet but it's good to do extra research like downloading the questions from the uscis website.

That's not ALWAYS the case, though that seems to be very common practice. Lucy got asked ten questions. She answered all ten correctly. They didn't stop at six.

But yeah, as a practical matter, you've be well advised to make sure you know all the answers to all the questions on the list. Make some flash cards, and drill on them a bit every day. You only get to miss four, so you should assume that, if there are five questions you don't know the answers to, those five will be among the ones your examiner picks. In other words, make sure you know almost all of them.

On the big day, don't freak out if you forget the answer to one of the questions.

I haven't heard of examiners getting creative and original. I believe they always ask the questions directly from the list.

Oh, and if you fail, you can get a re-test, but it takes awhile. If you fail a second time, your application will be denied. If you want to try again, you'll have to start all over with a new N-400. That's on page 37 of the M-476.
