Who's actually SEEN the Da Vinci Code? What did you think of it?

IMHO all religions contain truth. If they didn't, they wouldn't be followed, because no matter what kind of dogma you try to force upon people the truth will win out eventually. The problem is when you decide the truth of your religion is better than others, or (worse) that other religions cannot have truth. Then you find yourself on a crusade, or forcing your religion on others at the point of a sword.

 I don't think it is wrong at all for someone to believe strongly that what they believe in, is the only truth. Have you seen me forcing my religion on anyone around here? You can't force anyone to believe something, they have to decide for themselves. I only believe in one truth, and feel it to be the only truth. There is nothing wrong in actually believing something concrete in life. At the same time I don't go around forcing others to listen to me or believe the way I do. I do talk about it but also want to live how I believe and not just talk about it, so people can actually see it working in my existence not just words coming out of my mouth.

Someone can think there is only one truth and yet still does not go around forcing people to do anything. The crusades, etc were horrible...even more because those taking part in killing others for the name of religion were not following the teachings they claimed to believe in.

So I respectfully disagree with your opinion. We are all entitled to believe what we feel is real and not have to go along with everyone around us. And the way you say others may force their beliefs onto others, is the same way those against those beliefs try to force ppl to accept that everything is true and nothing is concrete and that there isn't an ultimate truth. But I believe there is. That is my opinion, not a force on anyone.

My husband and I saw the movie and we are Christians. Nothing to get riled up about because it was obvioiusly fictional to me. MOvie was good, but WAY too long. People who do not want to believe that Jesus was the Son of God will believe that whether or not there is a movie that gives them a reason to belive what they want to believe. If I meet someone who actually changes the way they think from this movie--then I will revise my opinion. Otherwise--its just a movie and provides good opportunity for some good conversations about Jesus.

I only believe in one truth, and feel it to be the only truth

The problem I have with this statement is you have placed yourself in a position of superiority with everyone who believes differently. If your truth is the only truth, then those who believe differently believe in something other than truth, i.e. falsehood. This makes you "right" and everyone else automatically "wrong". IMHO this is a dangerous place to be, it makes certain people capable of doing very very bad things. One can justify just about anything because God is on their side.

BTW when I said "no matter what kind of dogma you try to force upon people", I meant that figuratively. I wasn't addressing that to you, Stina, or anyone else in particular.

I know you didn't mean me or anyone specifically, I just wanted to to bring another point of view.

I know what you are saying, but still it doesn't change that I believe in only one truth. This debate could go on for hours, but is not necessary. I could say, that to believe all religions hold truth, is to put yourself above those who only believe in one truth. And then accuse them of acting superior for just believing in one truth.

But also, many can think themselves superior, who think those of us who only hold one thing as true, are simpletons or narrow minded etc. It's a battle of beliefs, and will always be. I do not think I am better than anyone(not saying you said that but just trying to show my point of view). But still I definitely believe in only one truth and yes that does mean I think other beliefs are based on false things. But I'm sure many people think I believe false things too. So then all we have are our beliefs and opinions, and can't expect everyone else to think we are right, even if we think we are.

Your belief is that every religion holds some truth and that in itself is your belief, that has no real proof....for me I only believe one way holds truth and that is my ultimate truth, which also I cannot prove.

I'm not trying to debate religion right now. I'm just trying to show my point of view about labeling people, and that someone can definitely hold one thing true and yet not force it on anyone nor think of themselves conceitedly. It's always best for me to "agree to disagree. "

(sorry for all the repetitive sounding sentences!!!)

Yikes enough philosophical(if you can call it that LOL) rambling for me, for now. :D I have to start dinner soon or else Sujeet will be a hungry boy when he gets home from work.

Hopefully the thread will get :ot2: Sorry if I made it go off track even more!!

I haven't read the book and I haven't seen the movie. So I can't say too much about any of this but from what I've heard, read, watched (documentaries) I have an Idea of the statements this book/movie is making. I personally don't think the people rallying against it are afraid per say that it will waver their faith because if we are strong on our faith then we should not waiver. I think they are more worried about those who are maybe new in their faith or sliding in their faith. Yes this book is based on FICTION but it's got historical facts mixed in with fiction which could greatly influence someone who is struggeling to find faith in Jesus.

Jesus proclaimed in his day that many false prophets will come in the future teaching and pushing false doctrine and that we are all to be aware of this. This could be one of those things, I don't know. Is my faith waivered no but i can understand why someone who isn't steadfast in their faith might waiver.

I have read the book and I have seen the movie. They left out the very last part of the book from the movie, where she finds out that she has a brother. I thought it was one of the important things and should have been included in the movie. Other than that it was ok...

The reason it could potentially shatter someone's faith, is because for Jesus to have fathered a lineage makes him not God or something like that-minister talked about it on Sunday. Personally, I don't really care if he had kids or not, EXCEPT for the fact that it might cause me to wonder why it wasn't in the Bible, and essentially discredit the Bible for me. But it was made evident that this was a work of fiction and it had numerous historical inaccuracies so it's not really bugging me at all.

Ahhhhh, but then if it DOES make someone question their faith, is that a BAD thing???? ;)

Might then then lead to more quetioning and is that exactly what some religions might not want....just a thought...

Only because they are worried about your salvation.

And I think Christians are more offended than afraid that it is going to hurt the faith.
