i knew it would come to this. oh well. here it is.

how does Jesus being married and having kids take away the divinity?

It doesn`t.

I have read the book and I find it shallow, boring and very transparent.

However, it incorporates all the information already known..... but by being used in a novel as poor as this one the information itself gets watered down to a paperback bestseller loved by the masses....

and those masses won`t bother with actually doing their research....

Who ever did even the least bit research into the Gnostic Gospels, or Dead See Scrolls or the Goddess oriented religions of the era would very soon come to the conslusion that the teachings of Jesus have long ago lost their relevance, and were pushed to second place only to be replaced by a doctrine of guilt and shame used by a power seeking institution to manipulate the masses.....

I personally, feel it is only the more vital lesson if Jesus WAS "just" a man of flesh and blood living the teachings that he did- oh, but if that is the fact humanity has to deal with....then we are forced to look at our own behavior and answer the question of WHY could that man act as he did and we cannot....

And that would force us to actually start taking some personal repsonsibility....and wouldn`t that be awfull?

They tried it that way-that was the Old Testament. Because of it almost all humanity had to be destroyed (the flood). Nobody perfect has walked the earth, except Jesus.

Maybe those ignorant masses just wanted to read a book for the fun of it and nothing more... thought that's what reading fiction was for "shrug"

I have not seen the movie so I can't comment on the movie per se. But the theories, allegations, whatever that it puts forth does not shake, diminish or cause me to question my faith in Jesus as the son of God who died on Calvary to save me. It reminds me of The Last Temptation of Christ, the same protesting took place when that one was released back in the day. LTC showed love scenes with Jesus and old Mary Mag and the Catholic Church did take umbrage to that and did picket a lot (at least in NYC). IT just made more people go out and see the movie to see what all the brouhaha was about.

As the only Christian at my company, I get challenged everytime some new theory comes out. I get asked about DaVinci, I get asked about Judas, about the Wall of Jericho not really falling down in a day, etc. And as someone said earlier they come at me as if these theories to me ask fact and demand that I refute them and defend my faith. It's a challenge I enjoy and as long as we don't yell, I am cool with it.

Tom Hanks said that Christans should be glad because the movie will cause people to go out and try to seek thruth for themselves. Maybe he has a point. I do know that in NYC at least people are HUNGRY FOR TRUTH. I have had people read over my shoulder on public transportation and ask me LOTS of questions about the bible or books about the bible. They have asked me what I thought about the preacher they saw on Larry King (and even though I am not Catholic they want to know what I am going to do about those pedophile priests). People just want to know and as a Christian I don't mind being grilled, put down, chastised. Call me blind, call me sheep, call me non-thinking. Whatever. If it will cause us grab a cup of tea and talk like rational adults, I don't.

Above I meant to say, they come to me as if these theories are fact.

we were going to see it but saw M:I:3 instead. may go see it on the weekend. i don't see what all the fuss is about. the world doesn't seem to be safe for any kind of fiction these days, whether based in history or not. people protest DaVinci Code, Brokeback Mountain, Harry Potter, The Passion of the Christ.

they're just MOVIES and their purposes are to entertain the audience and reap HUGE profits for the studio. its really stupid to fear it and to try and stop other people from seeing it. if they ask questions, cool. questions are a good thing. they create dialog and help people understand sh*t that they didn't before.

My SO saw it yesterday and he loved the movie - he hadn't read the book either - tho I think he bought it - just didnt get round to reading it.

I thought it was a pretty good suspenseful movie - there was even a couple of funnies in it. I did guess the code word before Dr Langdon said what it was :-D

And I didn't cheat neither - I purposely haven't read the book yet, becuase when I go see a movie based off a book I have read, it's usually a very big let down compared to the book. So I try and watch the movie and then read the book. When I'm done this Op-Center book from Tom Clancy and friends, I'll start reading TDC.

Some other things people said...

It had some direct attacks against the Catholic Church sure (Opus Dei, etc, etc) but it main theme would of been seen as an attack against the whole christian religion. Protestants were based off the catholics, with a bit smaller portion of the bible (the Apocryphilia), but with the same core beliefs - Jesus was the son of God, was actually God, that he died for our sins and was a path to heaven through which a person and their past sins would not be judged by God.

The movie, which is definately fiction (and we're not debating religion here, so we'll leave it at that), says that the origin of the bible is a lie, that Jesus was a prophet but just a man, that Peter didn't start the church, that Jesus married Mary who wasn't really a prostitute, and that women played alot bigger role earlier in history then what we know it to be. And oh yeah, that Mary was pregnant when Jesus was crucified and that his bloodline still survives today. That Constantine decided to make Jesus devine when he created the bible (we're talking the plot of the story here) to quell the masses.

So I could see how that could shatter the christian religion over all. It would make the church and all it's teachings to be nothing but lies. The Church has killed before in the past - the Crusades for instance. Would they out right murder someone in cold blood, to protect a background full of lies? I don't think it's a huge leap of faith (excuse the pun) when we have extremists in every walk of life. We have people who claim to be such devoted Muslims that they strap bombs to themselves and blow up innocent lives in the name of their religion. They've taken an extreme view of their religion, there's nothing stopping someone in the Catholic church, or in the other denominations, to take that step either.

I've rambled on quite a bit haven't I? All that I said above was based on the movie, not saying it really happened and what not. So if I've offended a bible thumper or two, don't go flaming me :-)

And being from the south, the bible belt, of the US... I'm quite surprised that no one was outside picketting when I went to the theather. Of course it was at like Noon on Sunday - they were probably at church or in bed recovering from a hang over, or in jail for beating their wives/girlfirends :-)

Oh please!

I`m sorry, and please understand that this is just my personal opinion, but saying that Jesus was perfect as opposed to every other human who isn`t is an excuse, it`s taking the easy way out....

Maybe those ignorant masses just wanted to read a book for the fun of it and nothing more... thought that's what reading fiction was for "shrug"

I see absolutely nothing wrong with picking up a book of fiction and reading it just for fun....

I was, first, giving my own personal perspective and how I perceived the book

and second, my response was relating to the information given in the book and the question asked by one poster......

I did guess the code word before Dr Langdon said what it was :-D

This was one of the holes I found in the movie. A French man leaves a cryptex (sp?) for his French granddaughter, and (according to the movie) uses an English word to open it? And the funny thing is, the French word has the same number of letters!

but it main theme would of been seen as an attack against the whole christian religion.

This I don't get. So what if the whole movie is correct? How would that change the teachings of Christ? Isn't that the whole point of it anyway?

IMHO all religions contain truth. If they didn't, they wouldn't be followed, because no matter what kind of dogma you try to force upon people the truth will win out eventually. The problem is when you decide the truth of your religion is better than others, or (worse) that other religions cannot have truth. Then you find yourself on a crusade, or forcing your religion on others at the point of a sword.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

 I don't think it is wrong at all for someone to believe strongly that what they believe in, is the only truth. Have you seen me forcing my religion on anyone around here? You can't force anyone to believe something, they have to decide for themselves. I only believe in one truth, and feel it to be the only truth. There is nothing wrong in actually believing something concrete in life. At the same time I don't go around forcing others to listen to me or believe the way I do. I do talk about it but also want to live how I believe and not just talk about it, so people can actually see it working in my existence not just words coming out of my mouth.

Someone can think there is only one truth and yet still does not go around forcing people to do anything. The crusades, etc were horrible...even more because those taking part in killing others for the name of religion were not following the teachings they claimed to believe in.

So I respectfully disagree with your opinion. We are all entitled to believe what we feel is real and not have to go along with everyone around us. And the way you say others may force their beliefs onto others, is the same way those against those beliefs try to force ppl to accept that everything is true and nothing is concrete and that there isn't an ultimate truth. But I believe there is. That is my opinion, not a force on anyone.
