SSN- Married or maiden name? Hyphenated or not?

 Share

My passport has my first name with hyphen, and my maiden surname

My visa has my first name without hyphen, and my married surname

When I go to apply for my SSN do you think they will allow me to have my card issued as: first name with hyphen and my married surname?

thanks

You will have to go and find out... They will issue it in your legal name... If you can bridge the "gap" then they can, if you cannot then they won't. My guess is better than average chance that they won't until you get it changed on your greencard...

YMMV

First off did she check off on the DS-230 to be assigned an SSN? Has she been here 3 weeks, if not, no need to head into the SSA office now.

RM 00202.315 Enumeration At Entry:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100202315

This will be helpful if she needs to apply at an SSA office after waiting 3 weeks for her card.

The name in line 1 of the SSN application (name to be shown on card) must agree with the name shown on the document submitted as evidence of identity...

RM 00202.105 Form SS-5 Item 1 — Name:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100202105

The documents acceptable as evidence of identity are now based on three factors: (1) the applicant’s age, (2) the applicant’s citizenship/alien status, and (3) the relative probative value of documents.

Primary Identity Evidence for an alien:

-- Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card (includes temporary I-551 stamp/machine readable

immigrant visa (MRIV) in combination with an unexpired foreign passport when the I-551 Permanent

Resident Card has not yet been issued)

RM 00203.210 C. Procedure - Immigration Document as Evidence of Legal Name:

When an alien applies for an SSN card, we presume the name on the immigration document is the legal name unless the applicant presents evidence of a legal name change, e.g., marriage, which occurred after the immigration document was issued.

In cases where an alien applies for a replacement SSN card and submits an immigration document showing a name that is different from the name on the prior Numident record, accept the immigration document as evidence of the legal name. In these cases, the prior SSN card may have been issued in a name that was not the number holder’s legal name.

RM 00203.210 Changing Numident Name Data:

Great, thanks for clarifying that for me

Yes, I checked the box but the immigration officer at POE said it would take 4-6 weeks to arrive and that if I wanted it sooner to just pop down to the social security office and apply for it in person

You might want to read this first before doing that.

OFFICE OFTHE INSPECTOR GENERAL

SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION

ASSESSMENT OF THE ENUMERATION AT ENTRY PROCESS

http://www.ssa.gov/oig/ADOBEPDF/audittxt/A-08-04-14093.htm

IMMIGRANTS APPLIED FOR SSNs THROUGH ENUMERATION AT ENTRY AND AT FOs

One of EAE's key features is that it allows immigrants to apply for an SSN as part of the immigration process rather than requiring that they visit an SSA FO. However, we are concerned that a number of immigrants apply for SSNs through EAE and at FOs. In fact, many immigrants visit an FO within the first week of entering the country. SSA personnel at five of the six FOs we visited told us that most immigrants who apply for SSNs through EAE also apply at an FO. Our findings appear to support their concerns.

We estimate that about 645 (about 56 percent) of the projected 1,161 immigrants with multiple SSNs visited an SSA FO within 1 week of entering the country.

Lady at the social security office said yes, I can apply in person even if I have already checked the box on my form. It takes about 24hrs to be assigned a number and my card will be mailed within 5-7 days - much quicker than waiting 4-6 weeks!

Only rule is that one has to be in the country for at least 10 days before they can apply so I will go back again next week.

At which SSA office did the idiot tell you this? Lets see if you get two SSNs. There is no rule about waiting 10 days to apply, It's that they suggest that people allow 10 days for their info to make it into the verification system, but you can apply as soon as you get off the boat if you want.

If you have the number and card it's active. Some businesses use the SSA High Group list to tell if an SSN has been assigned. Either your SSN was assigned from a Group within your SSN Area that has just started to be used or they are using an old list.

Area Group Serial (AAA-GG-SSSS)

SSN - Order of Issuance:

http://www.ssa.gov/employer/ssnweb.htm

High Group History List:

http://www.ssa.gov/employer/ssnvhighgroup.htm

Social Security Number Allocations:

http://www.ssa.gov/employer/stateweb.htm

One other thing, if the SSN was assigned from the DS-230 checkoff, your SSN record will have your A#. If it's from the application you filed at the SSA office it doesn't have it.

My number was assigned from my DS-230 form but I don't have my card yet.

When I was at the bank the teller said he couldnt find my SSN on the system and asked me if it had been activated yet, I said I didn't know. He rang someone who confirmed it had been assigned but would take 4-6 weeks to be activated, whatever that means. But since I was adding myself to an existing account there wouldn't be any problem.. he said if I was opening a new account I would have to wait until my number was activated before they could process my application. Not sure what that all means but it's just what I was told..

Like I said if you have the SSN and card it's valid and active. That 4 to 6 weeks stuff is the bank's policy.

I received my card on Monday and noticed they put my first name incorrectly. Only had the first part of my first name, completely omitting the second part. I went down to the SSA today and explained my situation to an Asian lady. She looked up my details on the system and said that my whoever entered my details at immigration stuffed up both my name and my parents' names. She corrected everything and a new card will be issued to me with my full first name, including hyphen.

Just hope my name's not stuffed up on my green card when it arrives ><
