If they only go home on the weekends, what's the ish with the bus fares? lol

And who 'cares for the children' durin the week?

maybe they mean they have to stay in the city because of the bus fare being too high..

I'd like to see where one can stay in the city m-f all month long for less than $500/person...

Park benches are free...

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

So, I had to do the math because it's what I do:

98 miles from Tobyhanna to NYC one way - 196 miles round trip

Current IRS mileage rate: $0.505

Round trip per day if she drove - $98.98

Let's just say 20 days per month...$1979.60

They are SAVING money this way - if it costs a couple $1000/month : doing the math wouldn't that be $500/person?

Nevermind the fact that she isn't doing the driving, fighting traffic, worried about maintainence. I hate her!

[yes, wrong side of the bed, or I took my b****y pill today, take your pick].

you get IRS mileage for driving to work?

I'm wondering about that one, too...if you have a second job that you commute to from your first job, you can get IRS mileage for that, but not for going from your home to your principle place of work...unless the law changed in the last couple years

people need to live close to each other ... the fear of the great outdoors don't ya know .... that's why these ppl moved from the city ... to experience the great outdoors.

It's all relative. A quarter acre is much more than most Pocono-NYC commuters can afford closer to work. And developers who actually build out the subdivisions in the Poconos know they don't expect much, so build things real close together and maximize their own profits by squeezing in as many people as possible.

This weekend, I went out and visited a subdivision mostly completed with small parts still under construction about 40 minutes north of where I work. It's the ugliest thing I've ever seen. Here's a satellite image grab. Notice how close together everything is. But the place is on top of a hill and has gorgeous mountain views. And more importantly, it lets people think they have a house and not a condo/townhouse.

ps. that whole complex is in the upper 300s if you buy from a previous owner, in the mid 400s if you buy new from a builder.

What kind of moron buys a place like that? I mean....really. They all look the same, they have no character, they're stacked up on each other, and you can hear your neighbors having sex. LOL

I'd have to be pretty desperate to live in one of those cardboard condos.

Same can be said about the dense urban apartments many want us living in as an "environmentally conscious" alternative to urban sprawl. At least with these SFHs, you own the whole building, and there is some space between your home and your neighbor's, even if it is ridiculously small...

Here I am confusing people I guess...I used the IRS amount because it's a recogonized standard. Of course an individual's own circumstance prevail for the cost per mile ie what the financial situation of the car may be [financed, leased, depreciated, old clunker that is just about paying for itself because you've had it for 18 years], what's the gas mileage look like, do they have huge insurance premiums because they can't drive worth a damn, etc etc - but for illustrative purposes I used what a lot of people may regard as the "standard" per mile cost. Even if you do the math at $.30/mile taking the bus would make great economic sense.

The people who moved from Jersey or the Outer Boroughs took a risk and some of that is now coming home to roost. Look, I'm sorry if they are feeling a pinch but they made the decision and now have to live with those consequences. I wish I could buy a 4 bedroom/3 bath house on an acre here where I live, but I can't afford it. Personally, I'm not going to move 90+ miles away just for that lifestyle....and that's the choice I made but I'm not belly aching to the editor of the local paper that someone owes me help with a downpayment on a house just so I have the lifestyle I want.

If she's good looking enough she could easily garner $500.00 a month via the world's oldest profession. Isn't there a truck stop near there? The driver may even throw in a lift if they're heading that way.

Many of us have to remain in New York during the week and only go home on weekends. This arrangement affects the household. There is usually no one to supervise the children. We are concerned for the children. What about their homework, safety and guidance?

Whoa! What's up with this? They leave the kids alone all week long??!! You're telling me for what- $500 a month you can hire a live in nanny out there? I don't buy that. Someone get child protective services over there.

Nope, not here. I'm a bleeding heart lib usually, as you know Charles :) I say, "Woman, get thee a job near home if you're concerned for your kids."

Seriously, #######?

Oh but she can't do that you see...that makes way too much sense. Why should she have to make such sacrifices out of concern for her kids? Sheesh...

That was my original thought, even with the commute no one is there to supervise the children anyways. Its okay Jack, dinner is the microwave.

Children raising themselves, but its okay because they have a nice house, nice cars and thats what really matters.

Holy cow..

that looks like calif. They love to stack houses on top of each other. So nice to wake up and see the person next door to you taking a dump or a shower.

i dont like house that close together. I want some space in between. and like in Calif. it is usaly 10 feet from side of house to the other side of the house.

Well, it depends on what you're willing to pay. Here's an example of a relatively new subdivision where each home sells in the millions.

The image I showed earlier is at a much more affordable price point (350-450).
