I have been putting our married name for my spouse on the I-130 and I-129F. For the DS-156, it asks for my spouse's surname as it is in her passport which is her maiden name. Will the conflicting info. be a problem/confusing? Will it be ok if I just show them our marriage certificate.

Just write her name as it appears on the passport, make a copy of the passport, the marriage certificate (Where it shows the name change) and also write them a letter attached to the I-130 and I-129F explaining this conflict.

Well, if I can, I'd prefer to change her passport here in the US. The redtape is soo much in other countries even for simple matters like this. So, I'm sure alot of people are in similar situations who have recently gotten married...in that their passport still has their maiden name...but on our I-130 and I-129F applications, we've put her married name. It shouldn't be a problem...right?

I think it's easier to change the name in an Indian passport in India than in the US but we have plenty of Indian members here to confirm or correct that as well as a regional forum to ask directly. It's a problem. You have two ways to deal with it. The choice is up to you.

getting a name change done on an indian passport is like dealing with hell...it could take upto 2 months before the name change can be reflected on the passport...this is because the passport office has to issue a new passport booklet and go through the whole 9-yard process again...not to forget that sometimes u have to grease their palms (if u know what i mean)....

but since u r using ur wife's married name in all the paperwork, i wud certainly recommend getting the name change process done in the passport to avoid any issues in the future...

i had a similar situation but i just went ahead and applied for my wife under her maiden name...name change doesnt bother us so we will get it changed when we apply for her citizenship after 3 years...its just going to make life so much easier...

good luck in whatever u decide to do...

it takes some time with any passport even the US pasport. I paid extra for mine to have it fixed express because I was going out of the country and it took a little bit over than a month to recieve it. My mom paid regular amount for hers and recieved it in a month and a half. So you can either try and change the name in the passport which will delay your process until you recieve it or you could just write them a letter. It is reaLLY up to you.

Obviously I'd prefer to go the letter route if acceptable along w/ showing them our marriage certificate. Should I just have my spouse bring the letter to the interview or mail it w/ her packet of forms she sends back?

Both, Mail it with the packet and notarize it as well otherwise it wont make any difference, keep a copy for yourself and also for your spouse and make sure you have copies of ALL forms and documents your sending in the package.
