so bush forces people at gunpoint to buy gas guzzling (13-18 mpg) vehicles for long daily commutes ...

I think the one of the arguments is that all the Gas guzzlers that exist increase demand nationwide, driving up the cost of fuel even for people who buy economy cars.

I better go buy a gas guzzler so I can make the long commute and be just like all everyone else ... not. The price increase for me was noticed ... but nowhere near as painful as it was for my truck/suv driving co-workers. There are many more truck/suv type vehicles in our parking lot at work than there are fuel efficient cars. Those of use who have been a little more conservative in our vehicle purchases prior to this past year and a half simply listen to the big bucks our co-workers spend for the luxury of driving the big vehicles ... all by themselves ... for a 60 mile round trip to work every day.

I seriously hope San Franciscans open their eyes and throw out Pelosi in this next election, opting for either a more reasonable Democrat or go straight to third party. Pelosi's proven she doesn't have the people's interests in mind, only in terms of their vote, not in action. Which is the same Obama has been doing. It's pretty scary how fundamentally flawed the Democratic party's mindset is when it comes to getting things done. Not as bad as Republican's, but one certainly can't rely on Democrats for the appropriate change.

I don't think there is another Democrat running against Pelosi in her own district this fall, however you could vote for Cindy Sheehan I guess. Now that would make C-SPAN a little more interesting if she was in congress!

Green Party is pretty popular in the area.

Not that they stand a chance, but one can wish.

At my last job, about 50% of the cars were Prius', Civic Hybrids, Lexus RX400h, Ford Escape, or the new Camry hybrids. Some big businesses are giving hybrid incentives. From personal experience, Google was offering to cover $5,000 off a Prius for it's employees (non-contract). Then there were the discounts offered to Californians for buying hybrids. One would end up paying like $10,000 for a $20,000 - $25,000 car.

For some people even an extra 20 bucks a week in their honda civic hurts, but honestly I don't get the speeches on the left condemning high gas prices anyway. I would think that since gas is a major contributer to CO2 and one of the plans is to reduce greenhouse emissions that they would want gas prices to be as high as possible so people use less.

The speeches on the left regarding high gas prices are mixed. One can't logically be entirely on one side, unless they're short-sighted.

Firstly, yes, I do like higher gas prices, as it pushes more people to public transportation, or more reasonable sources of energy.

Secondly, however, some public transportation (ground, air, and sea) uses gas still, as does other industries that transport vital services.

So what makes sense to me is simply providing major tax breaks to consumers for buying new technology vehicles (including a trade-in/recycling refund for cars they own) that rely mostly or entirely on things other than gas (more immediately, like within a few years), while slowly phasing businesses into the same model (10-20 years) as the costs will be much heavier for them.

Having consumer cars in mass over to this side will make it more feasible to use local oil (North American) for business/vital services as they phase it out.

Overall, there's nothing that will push people and businesses faster toward that than skyrocketing prices.

Yeah Right,

Since Dummy took office, the price of a gallon of gas has gone up. When he took office the ave. price was around $1.85/gal Aprox. Now it at least $3.50/gal

He relaxed the standard MPG so the BIG 3 can crank out monster Gas suckers. he did everything to protect his and his buddies interest in the oil busness.

they are having the biggest profits under this Dunce of a leader then any time in history.

so I put the Blame on him.

And even if they open up the drilling on the off shore it will be 10 plus years before we see any products from it. so it is not a short term solution. It is just to help his buddie get richer.

SCREW HIM.. He needs to look in the mirror and say, That person in the mirror is to blame, not the democrats.

But I thought you guys said, year after year, that this was a war about stealing oil.

This must be the worst theft in history.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

It's a deceptive little scheme that Bush and Republicans are doing, they know that Americans are feeling the pinch at the pumps in addition to higher prices for everything and they're mad at the Fed Gov't. for us being in this predicament. They're being crafty by suggesting that opening up off shore drilling will lower the price of fuel without directly making that claim - they keep saying we need to increase our supply. No one in their right minds or who has a half a brain will dare to claim that opening up off shore drilling will bring relief to Americans at the gas pumps. What's really behind this is that both Bush and Cheney are oil men and they're looking out for Big Oil. That's why Bush rejects the Democrat's proposals because it would undermine Big Oil's profits.

It's amazing that there seems to be a number of Americans who are easily fooled by their scheme.

medics, we got a terminal case here!

are you saying ... bush isn't a dictator .... that there are others who also run the gubment :o

If King George really was king...then he wouldn't be limited to only 2 terms...would he? ;)

There is a lot I don't like about Bush and he has screwed up in countless ways, but some folks go way over the top here on VJ blaming this guy for anything and everything.

Bush controls the price of gasoline about as much as Obama or anyone else will. It is all about supply and demand. And Bush didn't force anyone to go out and buy fleets of gas hogs nor did he force them to buy homes way out in the suburbs far from work.

If he can't control the price then why he selling that line of BS to the American people? You can't have it both ways - saying on one hand, it's Congress' fault but then saying the President has no power in doing anything about the price. A little honesty is needed here...come on.

you bought it ... the congress does nothing ... and bush makes laws

Bush and the Republicans in Congress aren't willing to debate the issues...instead, their focus is on the supply side of it rather than even acknowledging the demand side of the issue. Why aren't they debating the issue of reducing demand and all the viable solutions which would have an immediate impact on the price of oil? Because that would hurt the pockets of Big Oil. Take away their tax breaks? No way. Tap into our strategic oil reserves? No way. Higher fuel efficiency standards? No way. You'd have to be a sheep not see the one-sidedness of their claim - drill, drill our way out of high fuel prices. You won't find anyone expert who believes that increasing off shore drilling is going to have any impact on what people are paying at the pump right now. In the meantime Dubbya's going to lay the blame on Congress for not allowing his buddies to drill away.

you are right about the huge vehicles and all the gas consuming toys americans think they should have ....we have learned nothing from history...

we just want bigger and bigger....from vehicles to homes ....the gas prices has humbled many americans....and we are learning to conserve and

stop being such a "throw away" society........but as far as President Bush...blaming democrats....he is president....did he forget that...maybe he

should push looking into the profits of the oil companies.... or maybe alternate energy would should finally be taken serious...

(AP / CRAWFORD, Texas) — President Bush on Saturday blamed the Democratic-led Congress for the high cost of gasoline and renewed his call for expanded offshore drilling to increase U.S. oil supplies.

"To reduce pressure on prices, we need to increase the supply of oil, especially oil produced here at home," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

I guess Bush is looking for a new job. I wonder how many people get to file bankruptcy twice in the same career field???

Or maybe he is finally fulfilling some campaign promises??

I will be glad when the "Decider" decides to leave...
