Question RE: DCF in toronto

i'm a canadian citizen and my wife is american living here in canada on a permanent resident visa. We wil be moving back to the US, my question or questions are as follows. What we want to do is have the application going and have her move back to the US without me and get settled with a job and start to rent a place for us to move right into to when the process is finished. Other than the initial application process at the consulate is my wife necessary for any other steps? be it in person or some signature? and if so at what step can or would it be a good idea for her to do this is if is possible based on the application process.
