So my mother-in-law's RFE arrived today. USCIS wants:

  • Proof she's been on an authorized leave of absence
  • Proof she has a job to return to
  • Information about my medical condition (since she mentioned in her application that I might need surgery this summer)
  • A detailed itinerary of planned travel for the rest of her intended stay
  • My financial statements and tax returns
I'm comfortable providing everything except the itinerary. I haven't wanted to purchase plane tickets for us to take her anywhere yet because we're unsure of whether they'd approve her extension. If I buy tickets and they deny the application, I'm screwed. It's not like you can change names on plane tickets so someone else can use them if the person they were issued for can't.

If we send them a list of specific dates with planned trips and an explanation of why we have not purchased plane tickets yet, would that be sufficient?

The list you gave does not include proof of purchase of plane tickets.

Perhaps I should have added the rest of the request. Here is what it says in full:

  Quote
Provide a detailed itinerary for the stated proposed travel you wish to complete during the requested extension of stay. This may include but is not limited to dates of travel, airline tickets, hotel reservations, etc...

THere are two ways to read this. One way would be that a simple typed list of planned destinations and travel datew would be sufficient. The other is that in addition to that, other things like plane tickets and hotel reservations must be included.

In any case, we can only provide what we have, not what we don't... We can send a list of destinations and dates and hope it flies.

I think the key word is "MAY included..." (thats how I read it anyway)

Good luck

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

I would agree.

Probably more important is the overall validity of the request.
