Hi all, I searched the forum but haven't seen anything yet.... I am wondering how I will be able to claim my new bride for my taxes, change my W-4 status to married, when it will be November when it happens??? She won't have a SSN yet,,, at least I don't think so... it takes 3 months right??? So do I go sit with a tax specialist??? Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks!! John

You can claim your wife once you're married - this is for W4/tax-withholding purporses - you simply complete a new W4 at your workplace and that's it - they may/may-not ask for a marriage certificate.

As for IRS purposes - you can chose to claim her at the time you file your ITR (presumably some time in 2009).

Social security card usually takes about a month (2 weeks after she arrives to apply, 2-4 weeks to get the card).

Good to have a baby or get married on Dec 31, that way you get an additional $3,500 deduction, but that doesn't mean you get that $3,500 back, you just don't pay additional taxes on it. IRS already took out 15% of your gross wages for FICA taxes that you may never get back and you can't even deduct that tax off your gross, even though you don't have that money, still taxes on your gross for your other deductions, so you are paying a tax on a tax. Can't deduct transportation expenses either that is getting to be a major portion of your income to drive back and forth to work or school, but that is the problem in being a wage earner with a paycheck, they can cream you blind.

On the other hand if your income is based on the schedule D capital gains form, don't have to pay FICA taxes on that, and any expense you encountered by screwing someone for a profit is fully deductible including all transportation expenses, food, and hotel cost. And doesn't have to be that 48 cents per mile, if you drive a Rolls Royce, can fully deduct the depreciation of that vehicle plus all insurance and maintenance cost. But if you are a poor slob driving an old wreck and have to use your CC to get repairs on that, can't even deduct the interest you have to pay on that card.

These are our tax laws that promoted people not to work but to screw each other with the guy with the best line of BS making the most money. FTC was killed to help these people out, so if you are getting a paycheck, plan on getting nailed by the IRS. Ha, the schools claim it cost $10,000.00 per student per year to baby sit your kid for a couple of hours a day, but you are suppose to do all the rest on a after FICA taxes tax free $3,500.00 per year. Quite a contradiction, eh?

The IRS doesn't care of you claim married or single on you W4 form. What they do care is when you file your taxes you MUST claim depending on your current situation as of 12/31/08.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'
