Their roast beef literally slides down your throat. You really don't need to chew it. Fascinating.

 - if they have one in Idaho or Seattle, I guess I'll have to make Chris stop and try some of their fascinating roast beef. :P

We crossed by car at Portal, North Dakota, two days into a five day drive. As we found out the hard way, there really isn't much besides prairie between Portal and Minot, where we stopped for the night, and I started needing to use the rest room really really badly half an hour before we left the border. So, err, well, the first thing we did was desparately look for a gas station with a rest room. Very romantic, no?

Hi Everyone,

What an interesting question, indeed! Hmm...my answer as to what we (my husband and I) did when we first came into the USA:

1) Breathed a huge sigh of relief. Thank goodness we got over the 2hr interrogation process! What a nightmare that was. Paid $6 for my I-94 and got my Canadian passport back, walked out of the US customs office and back to our car. Drove out of the parking area of the customs office, and changed into a pair of sneakers/walking shoes in the car. With my camera I then quickly took a picture of the green "Welcome to New York/Governor Pataki" sign.

2) Drove to the nearby Niagara Falls State Park and spent the rest of the afternoon there, still a bit traumatized about the whole ordeal. It was nice that from the American side of Niagara Falls, I was able to see the Canadian side and say "I'm glad that's over. We made it across the border! Now I can enjoy the view and my visit here to the US". And what a view that was, my first view from America with my (soon to be at the time) now husband.

I had been up that day at 3am AST, and rolled into Tulsa at 9pm CST after 4 flights. Let's just say that all I wanted to do was lie down and sleep. My in-laws to be had other plans though. They all showed up at the airport in force ..... I vaguely remember a camcorder.... I think I was polite. :P They wanted me and Jerry to come to their 5th wheel which was parked down the street from Jerry's house at the local campground, and then go to supper. I was NOT in a sociable mood, so it took a while for Jerry to convince me to at least go down to the camper. I walked in the door, and there they were (with that dang camcorder in my face!) with a huge wrapped box on the floor. It was full of gifts for us, and letters/pictures from his family. I managed to unwrap everything and smile and nod enough for everyone's satisfaction, and then I finally got to go to sleep!

It turns out that Jerry's sister and cousin contacted everyone on his side of the family (it's a big family) and said "hey, jerry's getting married, most of you haven't met his wife to be, but you will, and we won't have time to have a wedding shower for them before they get married, so how about sending them a letter and pictures to introduce yourselves to her and something seasonal to decorate their house with". they boxed up everything and voila -- the big box on the floor. It was a wonderful thing for them to do, I just wish that I could have gone through the box after a good night's sleep!

Oh Cassie! How lovely. I mean timing is everything - and after a good night's rest would have been much better, but what a nice welcome into the family.

When I had a chance after the wedding, I went through the box again with my mom and really read all the little notes that were enclosed -- it was a very sweet thing for them to think of and do. :) I just wish I had been more than semi-conscious when I first opened everything!
