Anyone who is more familiar with an arabic kitchen, please can you tell me some spices and their english/arabic equivelents?

for ex: what is garlic in arabic? And mint in arabic? And other things they may cook with

What I'm doing is planning a budget trip to Palestine (haha) and what I want to do is bring my own food for me and my husband so we are not paying Paletsinian prices for food everyday. I'm going to bring tuna (in oil per his request), mac and cheese boxed, spaghetti.....any other ideas on things I can bring that are light to pack and something we wont get too sick of? I need to save all my money for plane tickets and running around in Jordan/Paletsine/Jerusalem....no money to splurge on food this time. Any other ideas? What I want to do is bring some things and I can cook with the spices there or something, but my husband does not know the equivelents of english words in arabic and of course the woman don't speak english so they wont know either:) So it's all me...I've got to learn how to cook FI ARABI!1

My sweetie isn't here right now, but what I've done in the past is good old google images. Another option is Ectaco or another translation website. The only caution is that when you put in an English word, it often gives you several translated words which may or may not give the right impression - although, I think that's more of a problem with less concrete things like "silly" and not so much something like "garlic". Another option is to take some spices with you in case you can't find them there. You might be able to just look and smell once you're there to figure it out.

I had mixed results when trying to make things in Morocco - some things we just couldn't find, like celery and broccoli. Other things were incredible there - better than here.

Best of luck - we had some interesting times trying to cook when he first got here. He wanted baking powder to make a cake, and it took several false starts before we figured out what he needed!

I do have spices with me that I can bring as well. BUT they are already open some of them. Would customs/airport security take kindly to that? I doubt they would because they may think it is anthrax mixed with food coloring or something stupid like that:)

Remember - it's not necessarily our Customs that will tell you anything is wrong on our side - you just need to make sure that you can bring it into Israel when you land at their airport...are you landing in Tel Aviv or somewhere else?

Remember - it's not necessarily our Customs that will tell you anything is wrong on our side - you just need to make sure that you can bring it into Israel when you land at their airport...are you landing in Tel Aviv or somewhere else?

lol me Tel Aviv? No way Jose!:)

I'll be flying into Amman. Amman is great, they dont check baggage on the way in. On the way out yes you do go through baggage check but msotly they just run it through. I loved the Jordanians when I got there because they said ahlan, ahlan! I've never had that treatment at an airpot before by immigration. usually they are like "What the hell are you doing in OUR country?" lol

On the way there yes you may be checked. My first time to Palestine, my sister in law packed the motherload of gifts and one of them was picture frames. When I was in Newark airport, the bags were ran through the radar detectors. And they zoned in on the picture frames for some reason and took out my bags just to look at them. they didnt say anything except for "Wow these are nice. Are they a gift?"

On my way back from Palestine this time, I had a 7 hour witch of a layover in Romania. That sucked big nuts:( Since I was coming from Jordan and even more, since I went into west bank they pretty much treated me as a terrorist suspect. they called their FBI (I guess) and ran a security check on my husband, asked me what I had in my bag that I had checked in and I told them the only thing that I got from Palestine was my husband had bought me a little light that was battery oprated and chagned colors. So he called his security and got all serious and grabbed my luggage off of the plane. And he made me unpack the bags and show him the light. I was having fun with all the attnetion though. He wanted to see how the light worked. So I tok it out and said "See doesn't my husband have good taste? Look at how pretty it is?:)))

Before my flight boarded in Romania, they called me first. No, not because I was first class mind you. (I"m too poor for that, lol). They called me to loudly say in front of everyone "Have you had your bags with you since you wre questined last time? Has anyone held your bags since you were questioned last time?" then they took me and as everyone is boarding me walking past me, I am the one who's got to be frisked, magic wand, shoes taken off. OMG I felt so......well, let's just say now I know what my poor husband must have to go through when he flies!!!!

I got back n US soil and I called my husband and said to him "See how much trouble your light caused me in Romania? " LOL

The point of my stories is this. You can be searched anywhere, not just in the country you are going to. Prepare for it. I don't fly through Tel Aviv for this reason alone because I dont want to be owned by the Israelis:) It was bad enough in Romania and the first (and only) time i flew through tel aviv. I wold rather be greeted with "ahlan" than "Pull down your pants" LOL

Meramiya is actually a species in the sage family... not our culinary sage though. Zatar is not thyme, it's a species within the oregano family, but again not the same as our culinary oregano.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.
