Anyone know of any cheap ways to calling UK mobiles?

The cheapest one I could ever find was MCI's Minutepass. It was $0.14/minute. As of yesterday, I can't top it up anymore...that's because besides the 7% tax they tack on for the purchase, now they're tacking on another 15%. 22% is pretty steep, just to add $20.

We use Skype for pc-to-pc...but our luck with it's clarity on mics is #######. It's not the same as phone calling at all.

So if anyone knows of similar phone card deals or even one that's BETTER than what I had been paying before...please let me know! Thanks

Thanks! :) I'll read up on that site. I'm a phone person too. I can't sit in front of the pc for hours, just to talk through a bad connection & a microphone. Plus we usually talk on my lunch break too, so no access to pcs anyway. :P

Let me know when you find the name of that other one! :)

I often forward my skype number to my cellphone. Then people can either use the Skypein number which I pay for on a yearly basis (A london number that is free to call for most of my UK chums) or they can use skype on their PC and it gets forwarded to either a landline or my mobile depending on where I am !! Gets you the best of both worlds and even when it uses up skype credit it's still at a fraction of the rate that calling phone to phone would. The quality of the calls is also often better when it's forwarded to an actual phone, even though it's coming through Skype's servers (wherever they may be !!).

Skypes quality is really down to the bandwidth that each person has available. Running video eats into the amount available for sound so that can often have a negative effect on call quality. You can also buy skype handsets that work just like regular phones and can get you away from talking at your computer if thats not your thing. I have yet to find a better alternative to Skype and it's something that all my relatives and friends can make use of in the UK, even if you're my PC illiterate grandma !!

Mark :)

Probably worth noting that the PC itself can have an impact on the sound quality and ability to webcam. Anything from the last few years should be fine, though.

thanks for the input. :)

We tried the skype forwarding thing. his pc is ####### so that doesn't really work either. always sounds like he's trying to talk to me from a drain pipe! which is disappointing when i am out shopping & he rings up...only to hear muffled words...grr!

if everything works out ok, he should be here in about a month & some days...so guess we'll just deal with what we got...i found a phone card for 12 cents/minute. dont think we'll find anything cheaper than that. :/ --- cuts off at 1.89 (remaining $) though, which is kinda annoying but it just means i have to redial the number again. :P
