Thu Aug 21, 2008 11:52am EDT BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil will extradite Colombian drug lord Juan Carlos Ramirez Abadia within a week to face drug and homicide charges in the United States, a senior justice ministry official said on Thursday.

Brazil decided on Abadia's extradition even though he was sentenced in April to 30 years in a Brazilian prison on drug charges.

"In Brazil he is no longer being investigated, in the United States he faces numerous investigations that can provide us with the information we want," said National Secretary of Justice Romeu Tuma. "This shows that Brazil is doing its part in combating international organized crime."

Abadia, who was arrested a year ago in Sao Paulo, would be extradited within 7 days, Tuma told Reuters.

As one of the most powerful leaders of Colombia's cocaine cartels, Abadia faces charges of homicide, drug trafficking, and money laundering in the United States, according to Brazilian authorities.

Confiscated goods that had belonged to the 44-year-old Abadia and his wife, including vintage port and a vast shoe collection, were sold at a Sao Paulo auction in April.

Investigations in the United States may reveal new drug trafficking routes as well as funds belonging to the cartel that could be confiscated by the U.S. and Brazilian governments, said Tuma.

If he's sentenced to 30 years in a Brazilian prison, leave him there. Why should any more of our US money go to pay for his jail time here.

Because that's not the deal that the US made with Colombia. Many moons ago the US government said to Colombia (in lamest terms):m "We'll train you and give you all help we can give you to fight the war against the cartels if you promise to extradite every person you catch who's involved with drug trafficking" This way they US goverment can do as they please with them over here. Colombia agreed and that's why all of them get shipped over. This guy had been hiding in Brazil for a while and they caught him with the help of US, Colombian and Brazilian authorities. They have to extradite him because that's what the US wants.

Their so-called "war on drugs" is a joke.

The people along the US/Mexico border don't seem to be laughing at the murder and mayhem. Neither is the Mexican government. Mexico is a narco-state if there ever could be something called that. Colombia isn't too far from that tag either, but isn't the big name in the narco trade it once was. Nothing funny about that.

What's really a joke is the hipsters that feed the narco trade by using dope. Many are rebels without a clue that b*tch loudly about the man and the establishment, but refuse to look in the mirror about the effects of their own stupidness. What's so socially conscious about feeding the narco trade? If people didn't think it was so hip to do dope this madness would not be going down. For many, doing dope is just a fashion accessory to show their hipness. That's the real joke at work here.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

I am not sure that it's the "fashion conscious" drug users that really are fuelling the drugs trade. I am by no means an expert, but I figure the ones who really count as far as the drug cartels are concerned are the addicts, the ones who 'need' their fix. Theirs isn't the 'I'm doing it because it's hip' culture and I don't think it is much of a joke really either.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Whatever you do, you're proned to being criticized. Whether its for intentional, entertainment, or just plain ole posting, it's news!

Those who think I only post about Mexico, you need to stop controlling what goes on the news by censoring them making people unaware! Your decision is yours to choose. However, censorship to news that already has been posted limits people perception on things.

ROFLing my pants off over here. That was the most misinformed thing I've read in awhile. The majority of drug users are hipsters?? Bwahahahahahha. At least when you use the word "dope" you sound kind of cute.

I don't really know many people who find narcotics "hip," as you put it. But funneh post!!!

PS I am on the US-Mexico border and I think the drug war is a big ol' joke.
