Hi,

I am coming to the US under the K1 visa and understand that once we are married I can go on my fiancé's medical plan he has through work but I am not sure how to get covered for the short time that I am in the States and not married. I also need to get the HPV vaccine in the US before I can do the AOS. Therefore, I will definately need insurance. Does anyone know how I would go about getting this vaccine pretty much as soon as I arrive and the cost?

Thank you

In our case we did a civil marriage shortly after arrival and I added my wife to my insurance, many insurance may add a person to a policy even if not married, they consider a domestic partner if living together.

As for HPV, cost can vary significantly depending on where you get it done, you will need to call various clinics, hospitals, health departments, doctors, etc.. and find out.

Please fill in profile details, You are doing a K-1 NOT N/A, and are immigrating from somewhere NOT N/A.

There are lots of travel insurance companies as well as temp insurance companies that will cover you for a certain amount of time usually for just over $30 a month with a commitment of at least 3. Im not at home so I don't have the link but it was discussed here in this forum not too long ago so perhaps try a search for the link.

Short-term travel insurance will cover the interim period between entry and marriage, after marriage your spouse will have 30 days or so to add you to his health insurance then you are covered retroactively to the date of marriage. The travel insurance is generally inexpensive but covers major medical for the most part.

Unfortunately, our experience with the vaccinations ("Fun with USCIS Civil Surgeons) after arrival went like this -

The civil surgeon took cash only

The vaccination (in my wife's case, MMR) was not covered under insurance since it was for "legal immigration" purposes - even though the Dr was a participating provider in our medical plan (and we have good insurance, blue cross/blue shield PPO with a small copay) That sux because vaccinations are normally FREE if it is a dependent child (and even when i pointed out that childhood vaccinations are for "legal enrollment in school" purposes they still said there was a difference - and that the civil surgeon didnt even have to honor their contract with blue cross to provide services at the contracted cost (immigrants here get screwed every possible way i've noticed)

SO - in short, expect to pay cash for the vaccination and also to pay cash (in our case it was $50) for the civil surgeon to transfer your vaccination record over to the USCIS vaccination form that has to be attached (sealed of course) to the I485 when you adjust status.

Hope that helps you

i don't get it.

We had the same experience with the Civil Surgeon....they do not take medical insurance even if you have it. Cash only.

My then fiance and I got married ~4 weeks after his entry into the US and he braved it with no insurance for that time. I'm sure there are short-term policies you can buy; however, such as those for tourists. You just have to decide if the cost outweighs the risk of you needing it.

Best wishes!
