I was wondering if anyone knows how long it takes on average to have EAD approved in California. I am about to move to US on K-1 visa and would like to start working as soon as possible. I can't imagine sitting at home for a long time and this is a very big concern for me.

Is there any way to have it approved fast?

Fly into JFK and get a temporary EAD (90 days), and then apply for AOS and EAD as fast as you can. There might be a bit of an overlap, but alteast you can work for 3 months when you arrive.

EADs has been taking close to 90 days to processes. The EADs are issued by the Missouri Service Center, so everyone is on the same timeline. The regional variations may come in when you get your biometrics taken -- if your local application support center is busy, then it may take a while. Best way is to get married right away and file for AOS very soon after marriage.

09-02-2005 Applications for AOS, EAD, and AP received by MSC

10-21-2005 AOS fingerprint notice for 12-08-2005

11-07-2005 AP approved

12-05-2005 Infopass appt at San Jose office for interim EAD -- Refused, because it is already approved by MSC on 11-07-2005

12-07-2005 Attempt at interim EAD at San Francisco office -- no go. Back to San Jose, where CSO (chief station officer) tells they will contact MSC via email to request permission to issue interim EAD

12-08-2005 Biometrics for AOS and EAD. Having no EAD appt letter was no problem (used EAD NOA)

12-15-2005 EAD arrived in the mail

12-24-2005 Received interview letter; interview scheduled 03-01-2006

01-28-2006 Received replacement SSN card in married name (5 wks since application)

03-01-2006 AOS interview -- approved; received stamp in the passport

03-13-2006 Green card arrived in the mail

Thanks, I was thinking about that, but going to US from Canada, you have to clear US customs at airport in Canada, so that is not an option.

That is what I am planning to do, file right after the wedding. Thanks for your advice.

Your POE is in Canada? So you actually enter the US without entering the US..... Strange

That applies to all airports in Canada, customs are done when you are leaving Canada, so when I flew to New York and LA, I cleared customs here in Calgary. Yeah, that's strange, but true. Once the plane lends in the US you are free to go, as customs are done prior to flying.

But, I am taking my car down, so POE will be at the actual border.
