one of the name i'd like to name my kid would be Vinicius. But i doubt any american can pronounce that and then they'd start calling him something else like vinnie :dead:

I like that name...I know a little boy named that who lives here (his ma is Brazilian).

yeah i love that name. i asked my friend if how would she pronounce it and it's totally weird. so I guess i'll be passing on that name if we have a boy.

Maybe this is a little far ahead, but I think of what other people will think of my kids name when they see it written down. Will they stereotype because of it? For example, if you pick an ethnic name, and someday down the line, a recruiter is flipping through resumes, and says "nah, we already have too many XXX, lets keep looking" A name says a lot about you. Usually old fashioned, biblical names represent power, and those people are more successful. You don't find too many Kylie's as doctors or attorneys for example.

Hmm I don't really agree. As for old fashioned bible names representing power, is it b/c those who have a lot of power these days have those names? And that would be because those names were popular baby names when they were born. George has been a name associated with power from Kings to Presidents, but that's not a bible name. The next generations will have different names, with only some of the same names sticking around. Kylie is a newer baby name interest for people. There may be a Dr Kylie one day.

My husband has had no problems getting jobs with his Indian name. Although people do stereotype Indians as smart computer people, and well he is, haha. But I don't worry about Kavi getting any future jobs just because of his name.

I meant old fashioned OR biblical names usually represent power. So your example with George fits right in.

I think some names are fun names, like the Kylies, Candies, etc and aren't associated with serious professions. I wouldn't want to limit my kid cause of a fun name I'd pick.

Some ethnic names do get stereotyped, and not just for ethnicity, but for race also. Not saying its fare, but it happens. People hear a name, know what ethnic group its from and automatically slap on the same biases that whole ethnicity faces.

Am I saying everyone should name their kids John or Mary, not at all. But saying that a kids name sometimes tells its future.

Hi Silent

My brother is married to an American of Greek Origin, they have three kids, two boys: Siddhartha, Akilendra and one girl: Julie

So I suppose it depends on how many kids you have and if you have the patience to be innovative :D

I have lots and lots of issues around parents giving their kids stupid names (I could go on forever!) but to answer the poll, we would like to give our kids, if any, names that are common in Scotland but not unheard-of in the US, such as Fiona or Ian.

I love Siddhartha as a name :D its one of Buddha's name. I am stuck between choosing Gautam or Siddharth while naming kids. I am not a Buddhist but still I love both the names. Then for a girl can always name Gautami. Though hubby thinks choosing reiligious names will have kids picked up in school. But I think Gautami is way better than his choice of Satya :P

My best friend's name is Gurjot and she used to cry herself to sleep at night because she hated it so much. She was born in India and is a Sikh, so her name is unisex.

It's almost funny to know that people tell her to her face all the time what an ugly and/or interesting name she has.

Needless to say, she goes by "Jo".

My hubby is Turkish and we've talked about names for future children that are Turkish in origin but don't sound totally outlandish in English.

For example, he likes Destina for a girl...kinda like Destiny.

He likes Can for a boy (pronounced like "John"). I'm just a lil worried about the spelling on that one though...he might get teased (or kicked...like "kick the can"). Hubby really likes it though, so not sure what I'm gonna do about it. Maybe an English middle name that he can go by in the States? I dunno...

Fortunately, its not an issue we need to solve immediately :)

ROC Journey:

01/19/2010 - Mailed ROC paperwork to Vermont Service Center

01/21/2010 - ROC package arrived at VSC

01/26/2010 - Check cashed

01/28/2010 - Received NOA, GC extended for 1 year

02/25/2010 - Biometrics taken

04/23/2010 - Conditions lifted! :)

05/01/2010 - Ten-year GC received...on hubby's birthday! Yay!

Fiona is famous, there's Fiona Apple, Fiona from that movie Eurotrip, Fiona from Shrek

Err, yes, that's pretty much what I said? It's a common name in Scotland but not unheard-of in the US?

I'd doubt I'd call it "famous" if one of the three examples you can think of is from a movie I've never even heard of. I've only known one American Fiona in my whole life. It's hardly "Jennifer" or "Madison."

This is a fun topic since I am pregnant. :)

We actually already picked names, if it is a boy it will have an Icelandic first name (because it is a saga name that I really like) and a name that passes in both Icelandic and American cultures (and happens to be my grandfather's name) for a middle name. If it's a girl, it will be named after my mother-in-law and the middle name will be very Icelandic too, but a pretty name (so I don't think she would get teased for it).

Since the child will be a dual citizen, we have to give it an acceptable Icelandic name due to the Icelandic rules... but that's fine by me.
