option 3. since he/she will be raised in the States, i want a more american name that has a similar brazilian version, so both brazilians and americans can pronounce without having a major pronounciation difference.

 Same for us minus the whole Brazil part. We picked out names already which are either really close from one to another OR identical passes. Adam, Noah (Nuh), and Jude are for boys, and Lilac, Leyna (it's both a German and Hebrew name, but the word itself means "ours" in Arabic so he liked it), Dalia (I want to toss the h in there for Dahlia), Sarah... these are girls with possibilities of Niran (obviously Arabic) and Majdolin (I love Madeline, this is the same name, but he has a cousin with this name). And yes, we are aiming for 20 children (Really 4, but I like options. Sometimes I like to see something before I actually pick a name-- see if it suits). I used to be wierded out by no middle name, only the father's and grandfather's etc names... but... I can deal. he actually said he wouldn't mind tossing another name on the girls in order to give them 2 female names for the US relatives but I'm kind of over that now.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

When we have a child together I prefer to name my Moroccan child a name that represents his/her

Moroccan Nationality. Whether that be an Islamic name or Moroccan. I like names that are different.

And I feel, whomever I may have married, if they are coming from different country, I find it to be suiting to

honor that heritage with their name.

Maybe this is a little far ahead, but I think of what other people will think of my kids name when they see it written down. Will they stereotype because of it? For example, if you pick an ethnic name, and someday down the line, a recruiter is flipping through resumes, and says "nah, we already have too many XXX, lets keep looking" A name says a lot about you. Usually old fashioned, biblical names represent power, and those people are more successful. You don't find too many Kylie's as doctors or attorneys for example.

Me and hubby made a pact that he will give the first name as the american one and I will choose the Indian name. But he is stuck with an Indian name -- "Satya" for daughter, and I truly hate that name, so we will see what will happen in the future.

I am sure though, no way am I naming my child Satya.........that's just is too old fashioned :dead:

Hmm I don't really agree. As for old fashioned bible names representing power, is it b/c those who have a lot of power these days have those names? And that would be because those names were popular baby names when they were born. George has been a name associated with power from Kings to Presidents, but that's not a bible name. The next generations will have different names, with only some of the same names sticking around. Kylie is a newer baby name interest for people. There may be a Dr Kylie one day.

My husband has had no problems getting jobs with his Indian name. Although people do stereotype Indians as smart computer people, and well he is, haha. But I don't worry about Kavi getting any future jobs just because of his name.

One thing to bear in mind about being of Indian heritage in America. Mileage will vary depending on where he goes. If people are used to Indians, he'll be fine. In some places and industries where they are not, it'll be tough.

At least that's how it is today, in 2008. Maybe it'll be different when he's our age. I hope so :)

There are lots of kids these days with "American" names that spell them a million different ways and people ask "how do you say/spell that?" all the time. Examples: Kylie, Kyleigh, Jaden, Jayden, Jaydain, Ashleigh, Aiden, Aidyn, Riley, Kieran, Keegan, Kaiden, Caden, Cadyn, Addison, Brayden, Peyton, Payton, Kayleigh, Kaylie...

I think I made my point. lol. Those are not considered ethnic sounding names but who on earth automatically knows how to spell each one? :P

That and they are all so trendy and dated attempts to be unique and different while keeping the status quo. I think Jaden is the worst current trendy offender. Like Madison (given to girls but means literally Son of Maud!) and Nevaeh before it, awful. I mean, there are plenty of good, solid names in the world that are way underused. Why not rife though some of those first? I am pretty sure my daughter will be one of the only ones of her she will have to contend with, while the name is simple, sounds nice, has a good meaning and legitimate history. One of my pet peeves is ####### names. I am old fashioned in this respect, I guess. :P

I have always liked unique names (though not to the extreme since I don't want my kids to have to constantly correct people). My name is Meredith, which is not common (and I love it), but not difficult for Americans to pronounce. However, it is VERY hard for Brazilians to say it right because of the "th" at the end.

On that note, I want a name that both Americans and Brazilians can pronounce. I've always like the name Joaquin - first in Spanish and now in Portuguese (the pronunciation is different). But, my husband doesn't like it :(. So I guess when we get to that bridge we'll cross it, but we'll probably choose a more Brazilian name since I think we'll be able to agree on that.

I like unique names but names *I* consider legitimate. I love Genevieve, which is common elsewhere but not so common in the USA, but it is a name, a real name, and not a made-up name or a *misspelled* name. Arabic doesn't have "v" though, so it's kind of out. I am leaning into him to get Violet though. They have a way to transliterate the sound but it would be difficult in a name with a ton of vs.. but just one v-- and we may be in business. I like my name which is found just about everywhere-- including in Arabic speaking countries, but it's not as common as something like Jennifer (sorry Jenn and Jen :) ). Yet, I also know full well how much it sucks to go through your life without people being able to spell or pronounce your name!

I had to pick the combo, because my husband is from the UK, so not too many differences in names. The only thing we ran into is the names that are popular here are out of style there and visa versa.
