Hi All

I got my K1 approved three weeks back but yet to embark on the journey. Trying to figure out financial issues.

My fiancee lives in PA and my siblings in NY. My siblings have better financial resources to help me during the intial

period.

So, my question is : After marriage and filing of AOS, can I start working at NY (just for a couple of months to get my feet wet)

before I plan to go back to my wife (by then). Would it have any negative implications ?

Just so you have evidence showing you have a valid marriage until it's time to remove conditions. Set up joint accounts, bills and I'd say have everything going to the same address for both of you.

Life insurance, wills help also.

Well, firstly if you're coming in on a K-1, unless you get a stamp in your passport, allowing you to work, you can't work until after you get an EAD card that you can apply for when you apply for your AOS AFTER you're married.

Also, what initial period are you talking about? Because after you marry, and file AOS, you're still not going to be able to work unless you have your EAD which can take 3-4 months from your filing date.

I don't about you, but I couldn't stand to be away from my wife after she came here on her k-1 after all the time and stress of not being able to be together. This sounds shady to me.

It's not at all shady. And that is for the Consular to decide, right ! I did not like this personal opinion while I was seeking advice as to whether I will land into

any trouble for living separately from my fiancee for a few months. I am not a mail order bride to leech on the earnings of my fiancee. I love her so I want to share

the burden of day to day expenses, sooner than later.

Of course, I can work only after getting EAD and if I land at JFK, I expect to get it immediately.

PA and NY is 320 miles apart and takes 7 hours by road and more than 10 hours by train.

US is going through recession and jobs are not easy to get hold of. Everybody knows about huge lay offs. Whenever I search for a particular type of jobs at dice.com,

I see plenty of jobs at NY but so few in PA that I can't even count them on my fingertips. I read that it's proper to bring only ten thousand dollars with me without worrying

for paperwork. My fiancee is not v rich. How long that would last even after she also keeps on spending ! On the other hand, my siblings are in NY since long and v well to do.

I need a decent job so that I can buy my own car etc. Sooner than later, I have to bring money into the home and my fiancee is fond of gifts ;) Moreover, I am v grateful to

her for letting me do this at the start of my career in US. Later, she can join me at NY or I will get another job at PA, as the situation dictates.

It's awsome you are trying to plan ahead, but EAD at JFK is a temp. stamp (valid 90 days only). So if you don't get your actual EAD card by the time your K1 expires, you will have to stop working. Here's the thread about it you might find useful:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...=145461&hl=

You just have to be carefull with this living in different states arrangement to avoid any problems with your AOS and later on removal of conditions. So a lot has to be done to establish your "presence" in PA. Whatever road you take, best of luck to both of you :).

I'm sorry you found offense, but just so you know, hundreds of people commute from PA to NYC to work every day by train. So, the whole 10 hours by train thing simply is WRONG. I was giving you advice based on real life experience, which is what I thought you were seeking. The reality is that you CAN live with your wife and you CAN make it work out IF you want to. Sorry, if it's not the answer you want to hear.

i dont want to voice my opinion whether this is shady or not. however, as long as you can prove that there is an existing relationship between the two of you then you should have a smaller battle to fight. I too am in a similar boat as you. my wife lives in southern california because she has an h1b petition over there and i live in northern california. none of us can move at this time because i am stuck with a mortgage payment in this poor housing market and she with her employer until she can get an EAD. do we have a pre-existing relationship? yes... weve been going out for more than 10 years since college. i just wanted to finish law school before tying the knot and this time i did it. we have been commingling our assets for more than 5 years. would the consular office believe us? i hope they would but i will be telling them as it is. times are tough and the job market sucks.

Hi Bassi and Zainab, Cmon no offence in your comments. It was directed towards kid_brooklyn who was indeed behaving like a kid.

I appreciate your suggestions .

PA and NY are ridiculously far to commute for work. That's a 2 hr trip in one direction. I live in NJ and I wouldn't do that.

Not everything works out as easily as people hope. Evetryone's entitled to their opinions but tact and disgression doesn't hurt either.

As for the original poster, it looks suspect to immigration officials if you don't live together. If that comes up somehow in your interview that could be a problem.
