I wasn't personally paddled in school cause I was a good little girl ;) But my school did allow it. North Carolina. At the beginning of the year parents had to sign a form either allowing or disallowing the principle to spank their children. My parents signed yes lol thanks mom and dad. But I remember seeing the principle's office and there would be this huge wooden paddle hanging on the wall. Thinking back, I was surprised it was allowed even in the 80s but hearing this is even more of a big surprise. Those crazy Southerners.

Never got or saw any spanking in school back as a kid. However at home I used to get spanked when I wouldn't listen ( yeah wa throwing fits all the time, screaming and running around, etc) One day my mom spanked me and I laughed at her, I was probably 7-8 yo, and she then grabbed a wooden spoon and whacked me on the butt one time. I never laughed at her again  I would just hear the kitchen drawer and I would get back straight immediately :hehe:

I do believe school is not a place for spanking children, but tell me it's physical abuse when you spank your child once at home.... I mean come on there is a line between real physical abuse and 1 corporal punishment. Of course there is always people that confuse spanking with beating, and that's a problem :bonk:

I was never disciplined and never really had any rules and I turned out just fine

Me either....we had no bed time or any kind of rules really....god, my parents were such hippies  But we were never unruly and all turned into decent enough adults...saying that, I didn't follow that through with my own kids but always encouraged individuality and independence as my own parents did with us.

OMG I had no idea that corporal punishment was still legal in some states. When I read the thread title, I thought it was referring to the 70's or something.

Horrible. I'm not against spanking necessarily, but it should be done at home, not at school.

Who cares, as long as they get spanked. I was spanked routinely (deservedly) and I turned out damn near perfect!

Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented immigrant" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensedregistered pharmacist". (because somebody gives a damn)

I know in Texas that corporal punishment is legal in schools, but the parents have to sign off on it. In other words, if the parents don't allow it to occur, the school can't touch the students. I've never known a single parent to allow their child to be spanked in school, so it's really just a holdover nowadays. If the state government got rid of it, no one would notice.

I am sort of curious as to why those who were routinely/often spanked attribute any positive characteristics they might have now to spanking. I can't see how that makes much sense because it is quite clear that people who have never been spanked can have the exact same characteristics. How exactly does one know that the spanking made them a better person? I would have thought it was much more likely that at some point the person made a connection, not that indulging in a certain behaviour resulted in spanking and should therefore be avoided, but that indulging in that behaviour was simply wrong. Spanking clearly doesn't speed up the connection or those who were spanked once wouldn't get spanked again. Bizarre logic, extremely bizarre and very fuzzy.

I also think it's odd how many people are proud of how often they got spanked. Again, that seems like a very inverse logic.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I don't think everyone is 'proud' of being spanked, but certainly some are, or at least that's how it comes across.

Although it takes time and patience a better strategy is to educate the child into why certain behaviours are unacceptable. It's not an easy thing and each child is different with different levels of understanding. There is no cure all for every occaision. I guess when you are a teacher the problem is the time element, you simply don't have time to deal with each child on an individual basis so the use of fear as a means of ensuring discipline in the classroom is the theory with corporal punishment.

The other side of the coin is rewarding good behaviour, which is I believe the system that is in place in the elementary school my son attends.

My guess is the ones that need a spanking aren't getting them at home though.

I think the parents need to be brought in for a spanking then.

After a certain age, I'd say it's more about humiliation than fear.

That could get interesting.
