My Wife wants to go to a school there, but it seems a bit pricey. anyone know anything about them?

Howdy Wideawake. My fiancee is going to a school in VN now but outside HCM. From what I was told by her Uncle here in the states is that there are like two official schools in VN. One I remember is in HCM and I think the other is in Hanoi. These tow schools are pricey because after they come to the states the transcript are accepted by most states so they can be tested and licensed and start work right away.

There are many others unofficial schools and some are priced more than others of course but one gets what they pay for. These schools will teach them but they are not recognized and thus any training will not count toward what is needed in the states. So if anyone comes to the states they must go to a school here and start over so to speak from the beginning.

I wanted my fiancee and she wanted to go stay with a Aunt that lives in HCM city and go to the official school so she could be ready when she comes over to get licensed. (She is gonna take over her Aunts two shops so she can retire andneeds to be licensed) (Her Aunt is who introduced us) Of course many families are control freaks and hers are no exception and would not alloow her to leave home to go to school in HCM and so she is going to a unofficial school to get a leg up and then go to another school when she gets to the states to get her license. (She is 32 years old and being an American it is hard to fathom for me how someone at this age can be treated like a kid but found this to be normal for everyone in this area)

Now each of these official schools do have branches but not in the outlying areas from what I understand. They may be pricey and all but supposed to be still cheaper than the schools back here in the states so if she can do so it may behoove y'all for her to do so there and then get licensed when she arrives.

I hope this helps but of course the info may be off a bit so maybe someone else can expand more for you and also help me understand more.

Mai called the school last night. They seem legit, and yes, you MAY purchase a very nice, professional set of imported French supplies for 15.000.000 VND, but you are not required to do so. We'll talk with you tonight.

I think she should take her schooling in the US. I'm not saying the beauty schools in Vietnam are bad or anything- I have no idea what they are like but some of the reasons that come to my mind:

-I'm not sure how the curriculum varies between Vietnam and the State in which she will be living. Even if she gets her license in Vietnam and applies to get her State license here- chances are she'll have to take a written and practical exam before the State will issue it. If she is being tested on her skill according to State regulations- I would think it would be more beneficial to study in that State- as she will be prepped well for all her exams and know exactly what it expected of her.

-Product knowledge may differ between the 2 Countries. Not just hair care products- but chemicals- color, bleach, perm solutions. Yes- they are going to all have the same basic ingredients but the education behind them- knowing the chemistry, how they work, why they work, the number scale for colors, etc may be taught differently. I would assume the color numbering system, for example, would be universal but I'm not 100%.

-Clientelle- people, trends, styles are going to vary anywhere you go. Training here in the States may give her a better understanding of what her clientelle will want. With the US being so multicultural- she may also have a better chance to work on different types of hair and people.

-Cost- Yes, Beauty School may seem costly but think of it this way- you can start a whole new career in 1 year or less, jobs are always easy to find, it is a job that she can do anywhere she lives and a skilled trade that she will always have. Hairstylists are never going to become obsolete.
