Do you know if once in AP, can the applicant request the passport back while they in AP - so that if needed they can travel elsewhere ? Or are they just stuck in the country while AP is being processed ?

Yes you can request it back, but I know its not recommended. If you request it back you have to depend on them to contact you to send in your passport when the visa is ready to be issued.

Thanks guys.. as I said before, I was not even sure that she was in AP. They told her that visa will be given after the "Additional Processing" is done. But here I was told that Additional Processing = Administrative Processing = Administrative Review. I was preparing for few months delay. But looks like it was some minor issue that they worked on.

After some research into security clearance processes , I guess my husband would have got a visa MANTIS check.

These types of checks are triggered when the immigrant visa applicant has an professional/academic background in one of the science/engineering technologies

listed by the Department of State in TAL (Technology Alert List).

That plainly makes sense why my husband was asked for his resume, research papers and publications 2 days after the interview.

His professional background matches one in the TAL list.

good find. But according to the website its for scholars and people applying thru F1, J1 and exchange student. Would it still apply to a spouse ? What field is your husband in ? Is he a doctor, physician ? Chemical research.. i cant think of any other profession that they would want to check on people.. By the way I could not access the list you mentioned.

Even that's what I thought, that it would apply to only for non immigrant visa like H1, L1, F1 etc...

Looks like they arre including immigrant candidates too. Otherwise, I dont see any reason why my husband was emailed the SAO questionnaire asking for his resume, academic background etc.

My husband is a Material Science Engineer.

The link below could probably explain the critical technologies referred for SAO.

I researched the different Visa searches also, there are several named after different animals, see link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_Advisory_Opinion

This link also says that the SAO was developed for nonimmigrant visas, but I have to agree that they would be just as cautious, if not more of immigrants.

My finace is also an engineer, but for telecommunitations, so I don't think he falls under the MANTIS list, at least I hope not, and they didn't ask him for his resume or anything like that either.

Praying those of us in the hell hole hear some good news soon!!
