It just means your case is at the Embassy and the Embassy has requested certain checks from Washington. Once, your checks are complete then they will be able to issue the visa.

Not always the case.... Many cases in AP at the consulate never go back to the states and the AP is all done at the consulate.. local checks and an investigation done by the consulate itself... MENA cases, given the current DHS policy, often get sent to the US for Additional Name checks or background checks... its much like an extra clearance stage in the process for those folks... Those checks can take a while for the FBI or DHS to complete... Cases at the consulate level that never get sent back to the states for AP can take a long time as well, but its usually a CO sitting on a case to see what the petitioner will do... or taking their time to finish the work/investigation..

DoS considers anythig outside of the standard processing as being AP... waiting for something...

You could call DoS, but they only go on what the consulate tells them anyway. There's quite a few of us, myself included, who only found out about being in AP weeks after the interview. If you want something in writing, you could email the consulate. AP pretty much starts the day of the interview or the next. Good luck, I hope your stay here is a short one

DoS considers anythig outside of the standard processing as being AP... waiting for something...

Why would they do that, just sit on a case? As soon as I found out that I was in AP when I called to find out what had happened to my passport, my husband contacted his congressman's office, who then initiated an inquiry at his request and then another of their own because they were unsatisfied with the generic response. He contacted his senator too, and when he called to follow-up he discovered they had lost the paperwork, so he submitted it all again and we/they are still waiting for a response. When I called DoS two weeks ago I was told that my case was finished in the US and that it had been sent back to the embassy...DoS has already confirmed that my paperwork is complete, that my interview was a good one (it was only three minutes long) and that they recognise our relationship is real. I was already approved at the interview. So at this stage, what's next?!?

Another VJ member has talked about conversations with a friend that is a CO that stated he often sits on cases to see what the petitioner will do when he has doubts about a case but not enough to deny... IMO it is a very twisted form of logic... Some consulates regularly have a stack of cases in a box waiting to be reviseted at a later date... files they just dont want to deal with now for some reason or another....

If someone is actually in a sham relationship, they may be less inclined to follow up for fear they got caught in the act...

Keep in mind, that getting approved by the CO and getting the visa are two different things.. Many times the CO may say OK and then later a supervisor over-rides that and says hold off untill we do something else.. Other times the CO is unsure, says it looks good, leave the passport we will let you know and then the supervisor says lets do additional work on the case or in some cases says denied... I have seen cases where the CO said approved, applicant left passport.. the applicant was called and told to come back and get passport w/o visa as it had been denied and sent back to US...

What did they lose of yours? Sounds like one of the requirements on their checklist needed to be addressed and somewhere along the line a doc got misplaced... pretty ridiculous that they would not just let you know about the issue from the onset to get it resolved quick and easy... but this is the Fed Govt.. not FedEx... nothing happens as planned it seems...

Thanks for explaining, it makes more sense now.

I know for a fact that they don't have the full set of passport photos they say they need (they forgot to ask at my interview, and I was so excited that it was all over I also forgot) - but I've pointed this out both in writing to the consulate and over the phone to the DoS, but both insisted that all my documents were complete. I'd be incredibly *&^%R%^$&% if 15 weeks and counting of our lives were wasted because of missing photos....having said that I called the DoS again and a very nice lady said that my case had not been transferred back to the UK, and that it was very definitely still being processed in the US.

All I know is that I don't really know!

Another VJ member has been waiting 6 months because the hospital didnt send the medical results until 2 or 3 weeks after the interview... AP...

When it comes to the immigration system... normal is when things make no sense..

The more I think about this, the more frustrated I get. I lie awake at night wondering what on earth is the reason I've been in AP all this time, and just the thought that we've wasted almost four months of our lives so far due to the possibility of missing photos that I have already brought to their attention a number of times is enough to drive me crazy. On the other hand, if it is indeed the case, it would put me out of my misery knowing the reason at last.

However, none of us really know why we're in AP, and why so long...I'm annoyed that I was misinformed that stateside processing was done when it wasn't the case, but hey ho, back to waiting :bonk:

We need more good news - anyone out there have some? :P

Guess I'll add myself to the pile here since it's been 4 weeks now.

K-1 visa, Canada/Montreal consulate, interview was May 12, result 221(g), with the note Administrative Processing

As far as I've been able to discover, AP is rare enough in Canada and usually ends quickly so I have NO idea what is going on, the CO who interviewed me told me it should only take about a week, I have emailed them, called DoS for updates, my fiance (the petitioner) contacted his senator and is still waiting to hear back. The consulate has my passport and I'm pretty much stuck at my parents' house for the past month, my living/working situation is not one I'm emotionally able to go back to at this point.. so I'm just living day to day hoping desperately to hear something.
