Why shouldn't two athletes with the same record both get the same medal?

Very disappointing.

I wonder the same thing. For example, what would have happened if both Michael Phelps and the Serbian who came in second had touched the wall at precisely the same instant? Wouldn't they both have rightly won a gold (I don't recall seeing such an occurance, so I'm not sure what would happen)? And if so, why wouldn't that work in Gymnastics?

Yep. Nastia should have gotten the gold, and Alicia should have gotten the bronze.

Has anyone noticed any thing fishy with the other point-based sports? I don't recall such ridiculous judging errors with diving, for instance. There the scores seemed to make more sense.

I agree, Gymnastics seem to have the only fishy, or atleast most fishy points system.

Of summer sports, synchro-swimming is also fishy.

Tangentially (as WINTER Olympic sport), so is figure skating.

We can take this into the World Cup referring as well. I seem to remember some VERY dicey calls made against Spain in the Spain-Korea match that ended up going to Korea in Penalties in Korea/Japan...

So, I'll supply some past fishys (from 1988). Those watching women's figure skating would have noticed that Debi Thomas was awarded bronze (even after taking a tumble) while Japan's Midori Ito (who got through her routines with NO tumbles) came out in fifth place.

I find it odd how China is all of a sudden AMAZING in the olympic games, 1st place? cmon!

There does seem to be a pattern:

• when Olympics is in Communist/totalitarian country, that country will tend to place first (though Yugoslavia DIDN't at Sarajevo in 1984)
• when it's in a democratic country, no such rule (Canada hosted two Olympics--1976 "bill for 30 years rest of country" Summer in Montreal, and 1988 Winter in Calgary--and FAILED to get even one gold at both)

I read an article from a Chinese paper, and it said because Michael Phelps won 8 gold, the Chinese deserve better scores. lol. I hate the news. I'm sure the athletes feel the same. They just want it judged fair, thats all.

I also read Softball will be out of the olympics, and BMX is the new sport this year. Why is softball out? I like watching softball and BMX. confusing to me!!!!

It actually makes sense, since it explains why cricket is also excluded.

If cricket was included pretty much everyone else would be kicking our butts!

I think he wanted to include pub fighting but thought that be over-reaching it a bit

Actually, one of the NBC anchors (the old guy who isn't Bob Costas) made pretty much the same point - he was remarking on how well Britain was doing this time and how better it would be if snooker and darts were included. At that moment, hubs felt that there was an American who understands.
