CBI Clearance?

First check the US embassy embassy websites for such rumors. Where did your friend hear that from?

PCC is equivalent to CBI check. At least for Andaman, I had to apply at superintendent of Police and then SP forwarded my application to CBI, a CBI officer came to my house, verified things, took photocopies of my marriage certificate and passport copies. Once cleared at CBI, they forwarded it to local police station, PS summoned me, I had to write down a few more things, things like who is financially responsible for my immigration. Once done at PS, PS forwarded it back to SP!

May be things are different here because it’s a union territory and we have a bit different emigration rules out here.

I had a sort of super police clearance at Hyderabad. It is called "Special Branch - Intelligence " if I am not wrong and is attached to the Police Commissioner's office. They issued the PCC and the same I submitted to the consulate at Chennai.

Good info silent!

I have heard similiar reports of detailed police checks mostly in North India. Other places, like in Andhra Pradesh where my husband got his PCCs, they just had him fill out some paperwork and give his passport for a day and they gave the PCC. No one came to check his home or anything.
