It must really suck where you live, or you must be pretty damn careless where you go.

For the most part, I feel safe in the SF Bay Area (Penninsula/Silicon Valley area), with an exception to a few well-known parts.

The only thing I really have to fear is crazy people with guns. Moreso now that SF is going to have (or already has) it's gun ban reversed. Is part of your police state plan to ban guns?

Mostly I find those who are in the most trouble either don't pay attention or have a habit of getting into fights with the wrong people. Police here is adequate, plenty of peaceful, working class neighborhoods for those who want to enjoy their surroundings and raise a family. If you want a bunch of cheap ### houses, and live in the urban areas here, you might consider an alarm system and putting bars on your door and windows.

This thing about America not being safe is true of certain areas, but not of the country as a whole.

Given the suicide attacks and constant fears of suicide attacks in Israel, I have no ###### idea how one could even perceive that to be safer. An old friend of mine who lived in Haifa had people down the street from him who had a rocket hit their house. Several people dead. They moved out pretty quickly.

Safe as in terms of being a victim of crime. Crime is out of control here when compared to other cities in OECD nations around the world. DC's crime rate is out of control. A shooting pretty much occurs every single day. I live in the DC area. I actually live in one of the richest, 2nd richest, counties in the country. Next to the richest, Fairfax; Which is next to DC.

The majority of cities around America are ghettoized; there is no ifs or buts about it. Sure there are nice pockets, "gated communities" (which I laugh at) here and there but there are also a hell of a lot of #### hole ghettos scattered throughout the country. As we know ghettos are hotspots for crime.

PS It is funny you mention CA because LA is the first and only pace I have been to where fast food, taco bell, was served to me through a bullet proof glass system. Where there is a process for me to access my food, using a two door system. The staff put my food into a compartment and then closed the door, in order for me to open a door at the other end to get my food. ####### is that... Taco bell in Congo...

DC is well known, like LA, like Chicago, like New York, like Miami, like almost every big city, for having crime. The more dense the area, the more bad things you'll see. Hence why research is a must if moving into an urban area. I've never seen any sort of paranoia in moderate sized cities like Redwood City, hell, even Modesto, where there's unusually high crime. Then you have many non-urban cities, either low in population, or even bedroom communities which average < 3 murders per year.

But most paranoia isn't of regular, every day things people in America know. They fear "terrorism", which is something Israel deals with on a more regular basis, and is in far more a prone area.

Police aren't going to stop a rocket. They have a difficult time stopping suicide bombers.

Maybe it's looking through a different set of eyes to foreigners. Maybe they see more victim-crime-preventing things like what you suggest, and it associates with some negative connotation.

One thing we sometimes over look is that....

when you go to germany--it is populated by......germans

when you go to france..it is populated by....frenchmen

when you go to israel..it is populated by....israelis

Now

when you go to any city USA, it is populated by who??

We are a diverse culture and unfortunately, we do not always mingle well or accept others as we should

and i do acknowledge that no country is homogenous but we by our very nature are not homogenous

In that heterogeneity is what the whole business of 'being American' is supposed to be rooted- unless you ask those with more 'purist' intentions.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I would agree, except... why is violent crime so much more pervasive in the United States than Canada? In Canada, which considers itself to be a "cultural mosaic" (as opposed to America's "melting pot"), individual cultures are encouraged to remain distinct. In the U.S., we tolerate this at best. So why is violent crime generally worse in the U.S. than Canada? Using the "diverse population" thesis, Canada would be far more prone to violence than the United States.

Because our poor are angrier.

Perhaps. Although I was thinking more along the lines of "looser government controls" and a "larger general population." The last time I checked, Canada's entire population was around 33 million, whereas the U.S. is over 300 million. That can make a difference.

There's also the "temperature theory of violence." What that says is in warmer climates there's more violent crime. If you look at the statistics, you'll see that there's more murder, robbery, rape, and so forth in the southern U.S. than in the northern U.S. or in all of the U.S. versus Canada. The idea is that when it's warmer out, people are more likely to be active and this leads to greater opportunities for criminal acts. When it's cold out, most people would rather get indoors as quick as possible to warm up. The opportunity to harm another person is less.

I suspect it has more to do with economics and population density. We can also bring "culture" into it as a historical factor - but I suspect culture was not the driving cause so much as something that adapted itself around the prevailing circumstances.

Also the availability and quality of support infrastructure (unemployment benefits, access to healthcare etc.) for people on low or subsistence incomes.

Population density and government programs that undercut the cycle of poverty are different in both countries.

Which is why we should take note, global warming will increase violent crime - no matter what is causing it...

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

:P

But also we must consider a cultural phenomenon... Canadians are a heck of a lot more tolerant of foreign cultures. That in itself makes integration a TON easier for immigrant newbies.
