Swimmer Oussama Mellouli enters Olympic legend by giving Tunisia first gold medal at Beijing Olympic games

Tunis,August 18 2008 - 40 years after Mohammed Gammoudi earned the gold medal in Mexico in 1968 finishing first in the 5000 meters track and field race, Oussama Mellouli entered the olympic legend on Sunday by giving Tunisia its long awaited first gold medal in the 1500 freestyle swimming competition.

Mellouli who clocked the distance in 14′ 40′84, dashed Australia’s Grant Hackett’s 14′41′ 53 hopes of clinching gold by superbly controlling the race, outlasting the Australian in the final.

In spite of his poor performances in the previous 200 and 400 meters races, the Tunisian champion managed to muster all his energy to win the competition, preceding both Hackett and Canada’s Ryan Cochrane who finished third in 14′42′69′ .

Mellouli is the first Tunisian and Arab swimmer to win an olympic swimmming competition.

”I am very proud to give Tunisia its first gold medal in the games” said an enthused Mellouli after winning the race. He also offered his gold medal to President Ben Ali for his constant support and encouragement which helped him give the very best of himself.

Immediately after Mellouli’s triumphal victory, President Ben Ali entrusted Mr Abdlallah Kaabi, the Minister of Youth, Sports and Physical education to convey his congratulations to the swimmer as well as the rest of the Tunisian delegation for this brilliant sports feat which reinforces the achievements of Tunisian sport boosting its reputation at the international level.

Thanks to Mellouli’s victory, Tunisia is currently in 32 nd position along with India, Ethiopia, and Thailand.
