Julianna I bet that was scary. :star::star::star::star::star: Good job though! In professional rescue we're taught to open the persons mouth first and sweep the back of the throat for any foreign objects that we might be able to grasp before attempting the Heimlich. But it's good you know now he is too big for you to attempt the Heimlich. This way next time you can direct him to the corner of a counter or table to try to run himself on in an attempt to self Heimlich. That's also good to know encase he is ever alone and choking.

Thanks girls!

Olivia-- I've had CPR (did lifeguarding) and it was his position that was wrong... and honestly-- I couldn't' do anything about that until he would have passed out and then it would have only been in order to put him on his side/back... I was talking it over with my nurse friend who said that I did it right since I got him to basically spit out a bunch of stuff in his lungs, etc. She also mentioned what i realized at that moment-- he's big enough compared to myself that I cannot afford for him to pass out because I would have a near impossibility trying to do anything with him at that point. Believe me, if someone is really choking, they are nOT going to let you look through their airways for an object :) They are panicking and are going to fight you and everything else around them, like how drowning people basically panic and attempt to get on top of you when you swim out to them-- and end up killing you both. I started to choke to death as a child once and my mom realized it and smacked me over her knee and hit my back.. and it got the food out of my lungs. I also once strayed too deep into the water and began to drown and it was about 20 seconds before she realized it and came and got me-- which were some very long 20 seconds. I was panicking, inhaling water, trying to hold my breath, trying to reach the surface... it was bad. There are a few other experiences I have had that I would NOT want to have anyone else go through because especially the feeling of suddenly not being able to breathe no matter what you did-- it is a feeling of fear one cannot really describe. So I kind of take this stuff seriously. So anyway, I guess that is something for us all to consider, as it is a lot easier to do this in practice classes and on willing practice buddies than an actual panicked person, especially one who nearly has a foot on you and has considerable more weight and strength than you as well.

ETA: LOL Tamara, my friend mentioned that now that he knows what the heimlich is and knows I will instantly spring into action with him... he is not likely to ever let me do it again unless he is really choking lol! She said he's probably learned his lesson!
