Hello,

I am not too sure, so I figured I would ask all of you here on VJ. My question relates to the I-864 and whether or not I need a co-sponsor. Here's the situation, my last years income tax were below the 125% poverty line by about 3k and I have also been unemployed for roughly a little over half this year (around 7 months) due to a back injury I suffered in early Jan. I've recently acquired a job (last week) that will make more than the required 125% and I was wondering if a co sponsor would still be needed or if I could sponsor my wife by myself and simply get my upcoming paystub and a letter from my work stating how much I make. The thing is that I need to submit the I-864 ASAP so I don't know how it would look to the person reviewing my file and noting that I've only been on the job for a few weeks.

Getting a co sponsor would not be a problem but if I could do it on my own than I would rather have that. Your input is appreciated!

Thanks,

Kero

My husband and I are in the exact same situation, and we are using a co-sponsor just to be on the safe side. Even though he currently makes well over the minimum, we realize that his erratic employment history could cause the CO reviewing it to request a joint sponsor...and the last thing we want is a delay over something that we can reasonably foresee an issue with.

Just get a co-sponsor. You will have to have proof that you are making 125% of the poverty line within the past 3 years especially if you are borderline 125% or the fact that you haven't worked for the past year straight.
