There are tons of public telephones in Rio and I'm sure that most hotels at least have one in the lobby.

We stayed in Botafogo so I can't help too much - sorry.

I've only stayed in the hotel at the international airport and it's a little expensive.

Could your SO call a travel agency? They might be able to recommend one. I've used CVC to travel inside Brasil before and they were fine. You could also google Pousadas in centro Rio de Janeiro...just some ideas.

NOA 2. Really?

We stayed at Hotel Itajubá, located at Rua Alvaro Alvim, 23. It is about 3 blocks from the Consulate and was pretty decent. They have a nice breakfast, which opens at 6:30, so you will have time to eat before you go to the interview. It cost R$130 (no added tax), which is the cheapest I found.

good luck!

Our friends, ScottnCati stayed at "Formula One". I think it's owned by Accor hotels, which own the Motel 6 chain. They said it was close to the Consulate, clean and cheap rates.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your replies. I actually made a reservation at Formula 1 last week, but when he arrived Sunday, he discovered that they did not have telephones in the room. He walked around for a bit until he located Itajuba which is 2 minutes from the embassy. He's happy with this hotel which is R$95 on the weekends and R$120 during the week.

I needed him to have a telephone in the room in order to talk to him at night. We talk for hours and it would be impossible and uncomfortable to do this on a public phone, not to mention expensive.
