hmmm, anyone forget that the US played with one less player for almost the entire second half and Italy STILL couldn't beat them???

We all agreed Italy played really really bad and the US handled the game better than the first one...but to say they kicked ### is way too much, otherwise they would have scored when they were 11 vs. 11 or even better when they were 11 vs 10  My compliments to the team for resisting so well being in 9, but still...that's not kicking ###.

Once again...we had to tie for them

:lol::lol::yes::thumbs:

Yeah everyone was cheering how great the U.S. played, but they still haven't scored a goal in their own. I say Ghana will put a hurting on them Thursday.

It probably won't matter cuz Italy and Czech Rep might agree just to take a draw so both go thru...

Not like that kinda stuff EVER happens in the World Cup ...

True...

Happened to us in Euro 2004...

I feel bad for the guys on the US team...everyone pumped the team so much making them look something they're not, giving people unrealistic expectations, all this just to attract Americans to soccer and to get as many viewers as possible during the world cup considering it is not an on demand event this time. Unfortunately, despite having improved dramatically since their appearance in 1990, they still have a long way to go before being able to do something good in major events such as this. I am afraid the underdog of our group is the US and not Ghana....

I'm just glad I have a television in my office -- though I'm pub lunching it for the England game today, maybe for US on Thursday.

I have to say the game I'm most looking forward to is Argentina-Netherlands tomorrow

I wish I could see the game today :(

Hullo...

New soccer fan here. I was wondering if the US has ever won a World Cup and if so, when? And if not, are there any serious theories out there as to why not?

Maya (new stepmom of a 10 yo soccer nut) :D

Edited to add: PS if anyone out there has any suggestions about how I can support him in this passion, I'd love to hear them!

They never won, but came in third in 1930. In 1950, the US team beat England in the preliminary round but had to home after losing the group and the US wasn't able to send another team to to WC until 1990.

If your son is interested in the World Cup, have a check out the World Cup Site. They have a history of the Cup-section, too.

Otherwise, the Fifa-site is a good place to go or for US-soccer the USSF-site.

Concerning why the US never got to the final, most people would probably say that soccer is not a popular sport in the US and is only slowly catching on. From what I understand, back in the day, it used to be considered an "immigrant"-sport and because it was "non-native", Americans thought it to be inferior. If you look at the countries doing well at the WC, all of them have highly competitive national leagues or a large number of so-called soccer legionaries playing in those leagues. MLS is a fairly recent development and has so far not attracted many excellent foreign players, most of whom play in Europe. Likewise, some of the best American players work in Europe, such as Kasey Keller who currently plays for a German team, Borussia Moenchengladbach. I think I read that there was recently a new book on US-soccer which should have all the info you're looking for.
