Well, it was bad luck in a way, but it wasn't the smartest thing to do. The foul was pointless because there wasn't a real threat, the ref was obviously card-happy, and Pope already had a foul (or rather several that didn't get carded). The ref, and he was a bad ref, does not have to take into consideration how a red card will hurt the players' team.

A player on a national team should know the rules of the game well enough to prevent being sent off the field. Pope had already shown earlier in the game when he clung unto the shirts of several Italian players that he did not quite get it. I actually expected him to be sent off after about 3 minutes into the game. I would have like him to stay in the game because I wanted the US to win...

I think the ref forgot Pope was booked in the first half. He didn't pull out the red straightaway, only after Reyna said 'he's got one already' or something to that effect. I think the ref wouldn't have booked him the second time had he remembered....

All I know is thank God Ghana beat CR or else we'd be out now....

The fact that Ghana beat Czech Rep. is good for right now. But the Czech Rep. beat the US 3-0, then Ghana went on to kick their arses, so... Well, I guess we'll see.

The best thing to hope for (if you're cheering for the US) is the Czechs defeating Italy (today, IMHO, the worst team in group E) by a high score and the US defeating Ghana. Because if the Czechs lose to Italy or worse tie, then the US will have a hard time making up the goal differential.

So, go USA!

Btw, I saw the game at a bar today and I've never seen so many Americans watching soccer with so much passion. Maybe today was a turning point in the perception of soccer as a major sport. Go American soccer fans!!!

How in the world do you figure that??? The Czechs right now have 3 pts thanks to a loss by Ghana. If they lose to Italy, they will wind up with 3. If we beat Ghana, we will have 4, thus sliding into 2nd place promotion to the next round.

If CR beat Italy (who currently have 4) then CR have 6, Italy 4, and then IF we win, we'll have 4, but then it'll go to goal differential between Us and Itay. A high goal spread win by either the Italians or the CR in that match up will make absolutely no difference to the US team as whoever wins that game goes up as first & doesn't affect our bid for second. A CR win would thwart the hell out of us. Now, I haven't noted how many goals Italy actually have...but we'd have to beat their goal differential to go up as second, and I'd rather it not go to goals as we only have one thusfar + whatever we make with Ghana.

but the bottom line is an Italy win over CR is the much easier path for us imo....I'd much rather go up with Italy beating CR, so Italy 7 US 4 CR 3 and Ghana 3.....
