Maradona fined for speeding on German autobahn!

story link

ARNSBERG, Germany (AP) -- Diego Maradona was fined for speeding on an autobahn after police clocked him going 37 mph above the legal limit.

The Argentine star, who led his team to the 1986 World Cup title, failed to slow his Volkswagen van on Thursday in an area where road work was underway and special speed limit signs were in place, police said Saturday. Normally, people can drive as fast as they want on Germany's autobahns. Police said he was driving 87 mph in a 50 mph zone.

"He paid his $120 and the matter was taken care of, like it happens a million times a day," said Guenter Noll, coordinator for the autobahn police in Arnsberg.

Maradona was pulled over by police near Gelsenkirchen, the day before Argentina beat Serbia-Montenegro 6-0 there.

Maradona's energetic dancing and cheering in the stands has proved a magnet for television cameras during his country's wins against Ivory Coast and Serbia-Montenegro.

USA vs. Italy was a truly great game, except for the referee. The card for Pope, though, was justified. If you already have a yellow card the next one will be the yellow and red card according to FIFA-rules (FDC 18.2: "Two cautions [yellow cards] received during the same match incur an expulsion (indirect red card, cf. art. 52 o) ) and, consequently, automatic suspension from the next match (cf. art. 19 par. 4). The two cautions that incurred the red card are rescinded. into the stands unless he is serving a stadium ban.) Bruce Arena, given Pope's obvious inability to stop grabbing Italian players' shirts, should have taken Pope out at half-time.

Pope's was a foul at best, I wouldn't even say yellow card worthy.....

sometimes it's just a circumstance of the game...it happened plenty of times today with no yellow or red card. And Pope, already having a yellow & us already having a player down, wouldn't have gone for someone's legs on purpose. Hence Reyna fighting with the ref.

No major sport should end in a tie. No wonder there are riots at soccer matches. I'd riot too if the final score was 0-0.

Brazil has the bestest fans.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Well, it was bad luck in a way, but it wasn't the smartest thing to do. The foul was pointless because there wasn't a real threat, the ref was obviously card-happy, and Pope already had a foul (or rather several that didn't get carded). The ref, and he was a bad ref, does not have to take into consideration how a red card will hurt the players' team.

A player on a national team should know the rules of the game well enough to prevent being sent off the field. Pope had already shown earlier in the game when he clung unto the shirts of several Italian players that he did not quite get it. I actually expected him to be sent off after about 3 minutes into the game. I would have like him to stay in the game because I wanted the US to win... :)
