World’s largest Quran on display in Pakistan

SIALKOT: The district government has displayed the world’s largest Quran for public view in Sialkot city made by a Gujranwala-based engineer, Javaid Iqbal.

Talking to reporters, Javaid Iqbal said the total weight of the 202-page holy book, which is made of stainless steel, is 9,000 kilograms, while the weight of each page is 70 kilograms. The book is eight feet long and four feet wide.

Iqbal said it took two and a half years to prepare it in collaboration with philanthropists from Sialkot and Gujranwala at a total cost of Rs 8.5 million. An audio system is also installed. He said the Quran would soon be sent to Masjid-e-Nabvi as a gift to Saudi Arabia.

Operation removes lightbulb from #######

MULTAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - Fateh Mohammad, a prison inmate in Pakistan, says he woke up last weekend with a glass lightbulb in his #######.

Wednesday night, doctors brought Mohammad's misery to an end after a one-and-a-half hour operation to remove the object.

"Thanks Allah, now I feel comfort. Today, I had my breakfast. I was just drinking water, nothing else," Mohammad, a grey-beared man in his mid-40s, told Reuters from a hospital bed in the southern central city of Multan.

"We had to take it out intact," said Dr. Farrukh Aftab at Nishtar Hospital. "Had it been broken inside, it would be a very very complicated situation."

Mohammad, who is serving a four-year sentence for making liquor, prohibited for Muslims, said he was shocked when he was first told the cause of his discomfort. He swears he didn't know the bulb was there.

"When I woke up I felt a pain in my lower abdomen, but later in hospital, they told me this," Mohammad said.

"I don't know who did this to me. Police or other prisoners."

The doctor treating Mohammad said he'd never encountered anything like it before, and doubted the felon's story that someone had drugged him and inserted the bulb while he was comatose.

He probably put it in himself. Maybe he enjoys ####### stimulation nd likes to masturbate to light bulbs

Power breakdowns of long duration continued in the metropolis for the eight consecutive day, causing hardship to residents, who resorted to violence to register their protest against the poor performance of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC).

Hundreds of people took to streets in Gulbahar, Pak Colony, Liaquatabad, Lasbela, Guru Mandir and Jehangir Road localities, lit bonfires, blocked main arteries and pelted stones on moving vehicles on Thursday. The protest caused traffic jams in many city areas and thousands of commuters were trapped for hours.

Even though, police and Rangers, who were deployed to bring the worsening situation under control, were lenient in tackling the protestors, who were fed up with frequent power outages of long durations.

Affected areas included North Karachi, New Karachi, Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, Shareefabad, Federal B Area, North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Malir, Lyari, Saudabad, Mehmoodabad, Landhi, Gulbahar, Pak Colony, Jehangir Road, Garden, Burns Road, PECHS, Defence, Gizri and Clifton.

According to some reports, there was no electricity in some areas of Gulistan-e-Jauhar for the last four days. Angry people had ransacked the area complaint centre and manhandled the KESC staff two days ago due to which repair work in the areas could not be possible.

Calling from North Karachi Sector 8, a consumer said that the power supply broke down on a daily basis in his locality during evening between 6pm and 9pm and in the midnight. He said that since last four days the power supply disrupted in his area from 3am to 5am and again in the morning from 8am to 11am.

Another consumer from Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 4-A said that after passing 40 hours, the KESC restored power supply in his area but after two hours it again broke down.

A resident of Liaquatabad area said that his locality remained without electricity in the night and during the day there were three breakdowns of a total duration of six hours. He said that due to continuing power outages the area people are facing acute water shortage as well.

Another resident of Gulistan-e-Jauhar said that since last four days his area was experiencing intermittent power failures of long duration. As a result, he said, the resident had no other option but to resort to protest. He said that out of last 96 hours, his area got power supply of 30 hours and rest of the time there was no electricity.

Also, a resident of Defence Phase II (Ext) said that his area experienced two power breakdowns in the day and evening for two hours each.

Another resident of Federal B Area Block 11 said that power supply disrupted in his locality for two hours in the afternoon. He said that despite repeated attempts to lodge complaint at the centralised complaint centre (118), he could not do so as all telephone lines were busy.

A resident of Garden East said that his area experienced three power breakdowns in a day on Thursday.

Till our filing of this report many city areas were still plunged into darkness and situation in some areas remained tense.
