so we hope they get this stuff over soon and they get the dayum visa.

one more thing....

please cooperate with the embasssy no matter how rude they are. no matter how retarded the questions

seem. give them what they want. be open and honest. I know its hard - in a culture like this we dont

I'm assuming the questions were re: the validity of the relationship??? I'm also assuming the person is on AP, right? cause I can't imagine them doing this pre-interview.... not trying to get into too many details, just trying to assess if this is a "field" investigation of another kind...

please i did not write this article

Once again, the Americans have succeeded in having their way as the controversial private road through a public park has been completed. In what can best be described as bizarre circumstances, a private contractor worked with extra speed to complete this passage-way through the Bagh-e-Jinnah to facilitate a couple of American diplomats for their daily movement from home to work and back.

What is more shameful has been the silence on the part of the city in objecting to this move. The provincial and city government had both expressed “ignorance” over the issue. The same has been the response of NGOs working supposedly for protecting the city. Even leading city commentators, politicians and religious parties have decided to stay aloof and not comment on this development.

It may be recalled here that the construction of this private road was started earlier this month in a very suspicious manner. First, a road track was planned through one side of Bagh-e-Jinnah. For this purpose, some tree branches were cut down. Following this unannounced clearance, the convoy of American consulate staff cars then started using the pathway. This continued for some time and was first reported in this newspaper.

After the appearance of the story, there was some muted public outcry on the matter. But most of these protests came from common persons. In the meantime, the Americans achieved another landmark when they got a proper metalled road completed. Some people, however, have said that this issue needs to be raised at all levels.

Former Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice (Retired) Sajjad Ali Shah told The News that a separate diplomatic enclave should be made so that the freedom of movement of the people of the city is not compromised. He said that the Sindh CM had earlier announced that such an enclave would be established, but so far nothing of the sort had happened.

Justice (Retd) Shah urged the people of Karachi to challenge this illegality in the courts. “Frere Garden is our national heritage and people should be given free access to it,”he commented, adding “I am afraid perhaps the government may one day sell Frere Hall to the Americans to make it a part of the US consulate.”

PPP politician and former Nazim, Nafisa Shah, questioned the idea of giving the US Consulate staff such facilities while the people of Karachi were being deprived their rightful access to a city park. She also said that since the US CG was being shifted, “one wonders why such a road was being built in the first place.”

City figure Javed Jabbar, founder of the Citizen’s Media Commission when asked, said “It is ridiculous. Being a Pakistani, we must raise our voice against it.”He said that the City District Government should seriously look into this matter because it is associated with our national heritage.

He said that the people responsible for this construction should bring the park back to its former status and the specific bodies that deal with city issues should play their role. “They have already been given so much security so there is a very little justification to construct such a road,”he commented.

It may be added here that the construction of a private road through one of city’s prominent park was by no means in the national interest and the purpose was to facilitate American diplomats. Frere Hall is a public property a national heritage site, say legal experts.

It is still not clear that who collaborated with the American consulate for the execution of this project. According to the Sindh Public Property Encroachment Act 1975, undue interference in a public property should not be allowed.

Food for thought

While eating in a restaurant, especially in Lahore, a common sight is seen where usually a family with small children is eating. The family is often accompanied by a small girl of eight to 10 years. Being a child herself, she is supposed to look after the rowdy children accompanying their parents. when an order for the food is placed, there is none for this hapless girl. The food arrives and all attack in unison. The children are worst throwing food and drinks all over the place.

During all this period the girl is watching silently. Do her masters ever realise what her feelings would be. In all these restaurants, including fast food, people who come are very affluent. Can’t they afford a coke or a burger for their servant? Think over it next time you are dining out. This poor girl accompanying you could have been your child as well.
