Selling of substandard vegetable oil and ghee in used tin containers and non-food grade plastic pouches is a great cause of concern as it leads to various heart and stomach ailments.

The warning was sounded by Dr Abid Hasnain, Chairman, Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Karachi, while talking to The News in his office on Monday. Dr Hasnain was wary of unscrupulous elements of the oil and fat industry in the country and hoped that efforts of Oil and Fat Committee of Pakistan Standard Quality Control Authority (PSQCA), of which he is the chairman, would bore some results in curbing such dangerous practice by those who valued money and had the least regard for the health of their compatriots.

He said that the “substandard fat and oil were saturated fatty acids and Free Fatty Acids and increased the Triglycerides levels (Higher Melting Points) that resulted in the abnormal fat deposits in the veins. They in their turn caused the Coronary Heart Diseases, he said.

Their metabolism and assimilation was very slow and it also resulted in the indigestion that was main cause of acidity in the stomach. If the condition persisted it may lead to ulceration of the stomach,” Dr Hasnain explained the chain reaction that has diverse effect on the body.

Talking about his department, he said that it was an offshoot of the Department of Applied Chemistry and saw the dawn of its existence in 1994 when first batch of the department filed out to prove their importance in the food-manufacturing sector.

He said that Pakistan was an agricultural country and it was felt that value added food products had to be produced for the food markets of the country and abroad. For that the food industries needed the required expertise and excellence in the field and the department obliged by producing quality graduates for the industries’ requirements, he elaborated.

Its main aims and objectives, according to Dr Hasnain, were to produce qualified food technologists for food industries, teaching and research organisations, to preserve, process and manipulate the agricultural crops, to avoid post-harvest losses and to protect the environmental safety

Dr Hasnain said that a raw material such as wheat was comparatively cheap in the country and it was easy to compete in the international markets. “By employing latest food technology we have increased the quality and taste of our food products and that has resulted in the tremendous increase in the export of food stuffs. Unfortunately, he said, even today 35 to 40 per cent of our agricultural products are wasted away due to obsolete storage facilities, mismanagement and general ignorance and lack of professional conviction.”

Tailing a monkey man in search of healing powers

====================================================================

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/india_monkeygod...cDJlYmhvBHNlYwM

====================================================================

KOLKATA (Reuters) - Thousands of people are flocking to an impoverished Indian village in eastern West Bengal state to worship a man they believe possesses divine powers because he climbs up trees in seconds, gobbles up bananas and has a "tail."

Devotees say 27-year-old villager Chandre Oraon is an incarnation of the Hindu monkey god Hanuman -- worshipped by millions as a symbol of physical strength, perseverance and devotion.

"He climbs up trees, behaves like a monkey and is a strict vegetarian, but he is no god and his condition is just a congenital defect," says Bhushan Chakraborty, the local medical officer.

Tucked away in a hamlet in Banarhat, over 400 miles north of Kolkata, the state capital, devotees wait for hours to see or touch Oraon's 13-inch tail, believing that it has healing powers.

Doctors said the "tail" -- made up of some flesh but mostly of dark hair -- was simply a rare physical attribute.

"It is a congenital anomaly, but very rarely do we find such cases," B. Ramana, a Kolkata-based surgeon, told Reuters.

Yes, as long as the LPR is authorized to enter the destination country. Just bear in mind that if one intends to stay out of the US for more than 1 yr, then they should get a re-entry permit before they leave the US. If they don't then they will be considered to have abandoned their LPR status.

For more details read this: http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/citizenship/...%20LPR%20Status

Cindi, one more thing. Make sure your husband files for removal of conditions during the 90 day period of time before his status expires. Failure to do so will also result in abandonment of status.

WS,

You are doing great. Conditional green card is a “Green card” however it last only for two years. Traveling is allowed on it.

salams Cindi,

I don't think he can "travel freely" whether its a conditional gc or not - he will still be required to obtain a visa for many other countries. It'll have to be a US passport before it becomes fairly easy to travel freely to many other countries. Basically, it'll depend on the specific country he wishes to visit, and then their visa requirements given his passport/nationality.

and as far as I know (I could be wrong), the "conditions" on the conditional green card aren't very many, basically it's a period of time for them to test out the durability of the relationship and that they've stuck together whereas back in the day people would divorce shortly after marriage and receival of the gc. I haven't really looked at the law on this but am basing this on what I remember my sister doing (her husband is Pakistani), and basically when the two years came up, all I remember them doing is filing their removal of conditions form and he just went to a local office for some paperwork. I can't remember if there was another "interview" of sorts then or not.

Hope that helps some.

Green card legally authorize an alien to live, work and on re-enter into United States without any problem after foreign visits. Please keep in mind that it is not a citizenship (US Passport). Green card holder bound to take visa the place he/she need to visit however I know for sure there are too many countries waive that visa conditions for green card holders.

The more common criterion, though, is time based. There are three important time limits to know about.

If you are absent for less than six months, you will rarely have a problem. It is BCBP's job to prove that you abandoned your residency. Absent that, you are considered to never really have left.

If you are absent for more than six months but less than a year, the burden of proof reverses. It becomes your job to prove that you are still a permanent resident. This is based on the concept that after six months, you have to be readmitted and have to prove that you are still admissible. As a side note, after an absence of more than six months, the various criteria for admissibility apply again, too. For instance, if you in the meantime had become inadmissible, say through an HIV infection, you might have a problem.

If you are absent for more than a year, your Green Card will be considered almost automatically abandoned. Once that happened, there is usually no recourse. However, if through some miracle the immigration officer didn't ask you how long you have been out of the USA when you return, then you may be in luck and able to keep your Green Card after all. You should in this case not leave the USA for a very long time, and make it your bona fide residence again.
