I had sold some items on eBay about 5 years ago, but really haven't used it since then. Now I'm trying purchase an item and I noticed they now have the other bidder's ID's hidden. I'm just wondering whether sellers are getting friends to make false bids in order to raise the price?

That can happen. Look at the feedback for the seller and suspected shill. See if they leave FB for each other.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

That's the thing - I can't see the ID of the bidder. The seller has a 100 % rating and has been a member since '99, but the same person keeps making these odd bids in $10 incriments and in succession.

Here's the item:

They should normally say who the other bidder is and you can look up their history.

But, I also think someone might be playing you...look at this bidder for a totally unrelated item.

Probably the bid assist.

You might want to watch out if one of the bidder has high number of bid retractions. I think I read somewhere about the bidder being hidden as a new feature from Ebay - I could be wrong. I haven't done Ebay since a year ago.

Yep...we can purchase the latest version of the same item (2008) from the manufacturer directly for about $50 more.

You might want to watch out if one of the bidder has high number of bid retractions.

Ah, ok. I just saw that stat. Thank you.

Forget about all that stuff, it's really irrelevant in a way. It's like any auction set a limit on what you would pay based on what you think the item is worth to you. If the item goes for that price or less, you win, if it goes for more, you don't. Very simple system.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

True, except it's also matter of how easy or difficult it is to find a used version of the item. I know I can buy it brand new for $210, but because of the unique nature of the item (they are study flash cards for dental board exam Part I), once someone passes the exam, they no longer need them....and they continually updated every year.

I'll keep looking...

That's why I said based on what the item is worth to you as apposed to what it is worth in the market place. Only you can decide if paying X is worth it or not. That said, it's not worth paying more than 2/3 current market price of an outdated product. It's not an antique your looking for :D

The autobid system makes Ebay a real treat to try to get a bargain. The only success I had was setting up an Autobid and hitting enter a few seconds before the auction is over. And that's a ####### shoot, you might get it, and you might not. You usually end up paying more than you planned, at least not more than you are willing!. If you try to bid earlier, someone always seems to come along and outbid you, and pretty soon you are paying more than retail, before the auction is over.

Good Luck...
