I'm very fortunate - the cheapest, most basic variety of contraceptive pill has absolutely no side effects for me, other than reducing pain and making my periods more regular! I have no problem with remembering to take a pill every day so this works best for me.

I was on the mini-pill at first but I didn't like the irregularity of periods while I was on that. My doctor had no problems giving me a different type to try.

Thanks.. The possible side effects keep on bothering me. My doctor said it is just normal till my body get used to it.. Have you heard about irregular blood spots? I will just start using pills this month. This would be a trial and error for me. The doctor said, she will change the precription she gave me if it is not suitable for my sytem? Have you experienced gain weight?

I have been taking Lutera (generic form of Alesse) and I haven't had any side effects from it...

Is Lutera a brand of pills?

My doctor prescribed Yasmin.. The manufacturer is Schinnger if I am not mistaken.

yes once when i messed up constantly with remembering to take it.i was basically confussing my body too much, by not taking it properly over a long period of time.

I HATE it. You also have to be really careful about taking it at the same time every day. I had to switch to it because the regular pills were giving me high blood pressure apparently. I'd like to look into another option though...

I usually take it within the same few hours, usually between 8 and 11.... or do you need to take them at the exact same time every day ?

My doc told me I only have a half hour window, if I miss it then I have to use backup contraception for 72 hours.

Crazy. Mine went over a couple of studies with me (yes, I ask for this sort of information) and it seems that there's a stronger correlation between weight & pill efficacy. As in, the more you weigh, the more likely the pill is to fail. Factoring out weight, there seems to be a three-hour window which is "prime" for taking the pill. But it also depends on what kind of pill you take...

When I was on a regular, low-dose estrogen pill she told me it didn't matter much at all what time I took it. I never had any problems. It was only when I switched to mini-pill that she expressed concern about exact timing. I don't know enough about the differences between the two to understand why, but I do know that the strictness about taking the mini-pill isn't the only thing I dislike about it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I've heard good things about the NuvaRing - I might look into that.

How you respond to hormonal contraception (pills, injections, etc.) is highly individual. Almost everyone has some side effects for the first few months.

I've always hated the pill, and I've tried several in my time (dontchaknow), ultra-low dose, blah blah. While the regular periods and mild cramps were a plus, after most of the side effects had gone away, I was left will a libido that was a shell of its former self. The pill also decreased my alcohol tolerance (not in terms of getting drunk quicker, but in terms of after-affects). Eff that! Because I like both drinking heavily and having a sex drive, I gave up on the pill. But I know plenty of people who have been on the pill for years and report no problems.

Diaphragm, rubbers, pull 'n' pray--the great nonhormonal triad.

What is that?

coitus interruptus. It does require some skill, but hey...

Hey now, are you dissing one of my favorite athletic events?

It's sort of like the biathlon--great mental control, ability to switch gears mentally very suddenly... I wonder why someone hasn't already made the comparison in scholarly literature.

If I am understanding what exactly is pull n pray, then I don't think its effective at all, well even the slightest of push can result in pregnancy.

I am trying my best to be as dignified with this topic as possible but here I go....prcum anyone, that too can cause pregnancy, so I don't see how can one advocate pull n pray.

Advocate pull n pray as contraceptive I mean.

I do advocate it for long lasting results ;)

I wouldn't say I'm advocating it--my response was half in jest, but it is a viable contraceptive method and can be highly effective if used properly.

Recent studies suggest that the amount of sperm in pre-ejaculatory fluid is negligible, and unintended pregnancies that result from coitus interrupts are more likely due to the guy not pulling out early enough, or to the presence of sperm in the urethra from a previous episode that mixed with the pre-ejaculatory fluid on the next go-round, if you will. But I wouldn't dismiss it entirely. Obviously, it's not the method of choice for a lot of people, and it's not nearly as statistically reliable as the hormonal methods and IUDs, but we're just throwing ideas out there, right?

Coitus interruptus is generally not recommended by, say, sex ed teachers because of the variables involved, and how much its success is dependent on timing and technique. I think the risks of this method are overstated, to be honest.

I wouldn't recommend it while drunk.

For those interested in IUDs there is a brand called Mirena which has a very low dose of hormones, is designed to stay put for 5 years but can be removed within months if the patient wants it, and the person does not have to have had children previously. Back in the day that was one of the requirements and was only prescribed to women who have had children.

And yes, some pills will lower your sex drive dramatically. You won't want to do anything no matter how sexually active you used to be. What sucks is that the only way to find this out is by trial and error.

The pill has been great...if you're concerned about gaining weight make sure you eat right and exercise. Yazmin is supposed to be great for keeping weight off, too.

Minerva (IUD) and Nuva Ring both localize the distribution of hormones so it's not circulating throughout your body like an oral contraceptive.

In the past I've used Ortho Tri Cyclen. It's a daily pill that comes in a circular pack with three different color of pills. The blue pills are sugar pills just so you remember to take your pill each day. I've been on it three times in my life. The first time I was a teenage full of hormones and the pill made me extra emotional but my periods regulated. The second time was my mid 20's and I gained considerable weight from it. May also have to have been due to the female body stops growing at the age of 24 and you have to change your lifestyle to maintain your shape. But I am convienced the pill had something to do with kick starting the weight gain because in the same month I started the pill I gained 30lbs and the Docotor just keep repeating that like in disbelief. I still see his stunned face repeating the words while looking at the numbers, '30lbs, 30lbs, 30lbs in one month." He put me on a lower dose pill after that but it gave me headaches and made my legs ache like restless leg syndrome. The third time I took OTC was in my late 20's and I had no side effects. It is all based on the individual how they will react. Their personal development, their age, their chemical makeup, their genetics, their lifestyle all play into the factors.

For the next time I need a contraceptive I have done considerable research and I believe I am going to either get an IUD or use the Nuva Ring. Both you can take out at any time and the hormones are localized to only the region that needs them.
